I think you can look into being a foreign exchange student somehow.

AFS and YFU are the most respected orgs.

Also AIFS American Institute For Foreign Study (AIFS) - Au Pair, Study Abroad, Summer Opportunities, Gifted Education, Insurance

Get moving on this quickly, tho, if you want to do it senior year. You need to start about a year ahead of time and check with your school first, but it's the most amazing time of your life.

hey, thanks a lot. [:

My daughter is currently a Rotary Exchange student in Ecuador. Rotary has a wonderful support organization with Rotary clubs around the world. Most clubs just do year long exchanges for students 15-18, some have shorter term exchanges. It’s possible to exchange any year during high school or for a gap year. It is also very reasonable - basically an application fee of maybe $1000 after you are accepted and then the cost of an open ended airline ticket to your destination. My daughter’s year abroad will cost us less than it would cost us for her to live at home. I was an AFS exchange student in the '80’s. I couldn’t afford AFS for my own kids but I don’t regret it. Rotary is a terrific organization and there is a real benefit to staying with 2-3 families during the year because you get to see different ways of living and get to know more people. Even with AFS students often end up changing families due to issues that come up - then they all just feel bad about it. I would have loved the chance to stay with more than one family. The Rotary process for next year starts soon. Contact your local Rotary club for more info.

My friend is in Switzerland with AFS.

He already knows the college he wants to go to… and has checked to make sure that they will take him with only three years of high school (just in case he doesn’t get credit for his German education, I guess?)
