Hi everyone, I'm posting this for my friend- a Chinese exchange student currently studying in Minnesota (who does not have a cc account of her own). I was wondering, is there any hope for an student from China to get into a good US school for engineering (not talking Ivies, schools like Purdue, WPI, RPI, etc.) without super high SAT scores? She has yet to take the SAT/TOEFL/etc, but I know the international competition, especially from China, is fierce and my guess is that she will score below the 700-800 range. What kind of scores are average for international applicants to these kind of schools?

well i guess 2000+ will be safe for the colleges u mentioned....

For sat 2s, 650+ will be 'ok' for those schools.
For sat, i'm assuming she'll get 780-800 maths (since she's chinese.. i know.. im stereotyping). and 600+ for CR and W will be good.

there are no SAT centres in China, so she will be exempt from doing it if she stays in China:D

Actually, there are SAT test centers in China; they're just all 'closed' centers. Most, if not all, of these centers are found on the campuses of international schools and they typically only cater to those international schools' students. Consequently, only foreign students holding non-Mainland Chinese passports (students holding Hong Kong and Taiwan passports are let into the international school system) are able to take the SATs in mainland China.

i got into the Wharton school (upenn).. ED.. my scores:

SAT I 600/720/590
SAT II math level 2 660 physics 650

...just write a good essay.. and get very good raccomandations...

Carlotta.

congrats lotti! :)
did u ask for financial aid?

haha...of course she has a lot of hope! I bet she is a lot better than I was and I am still alive ;) click the link below and you will see the student profile for purdue (I have no clue what is WPI, RPI, whatsoever):

it's true she can't take SAT in mainland China unless she is in some int'l schools. So she should take it before going back.

I'm a chinese, got accepted to purdue with SAT scores: 560/720/570

Thanks, guys! As she is currently in Minnesota, she will, unfortunately, have to take either the SAT and/or ACT. Any input on the kind of TOEFL scores needed to get in? I know the requirements for the schools she is applying to, but what are some averages? (she is applying to: Purdue, WPI, U of St.Thomas(MN), St. Catherine's(MN), Beloit(WI), Cornell College(IA), and U of Minnesota)

my oppinion of upenn just went down. seriously any international gets a good recommendation. hell they probably let you write them yourself.
i don't know what you did to get in. definitely not win a spelling bee. are you rich?

"raccomandations"
rECoMMendatons, darling.

Why act so harsh.. martinibluex...

My opinion of the the university that accepts you will go down

actually, it's recommendations, not "recommendatons". if you want to be pedantic martinbluex, at least bother to get it right. and definitely not all internationals get good evaluations. don't make such sweeping statements.

Ok. I apologize publically and I wish you all good luck with your study endeavors. I was today and I am sorry. One remark tho - an inadvertant omisson is a typo and three flagrant spelling errors in one word are still just that - three spelling errors in one word. which is just scary for words as overthrown during the college process as recommendations. nighty night asian girls.

yeah, and that's not harsh at all :) my university is doing well. heck it even put me on its math team.
sorry for the post. I shouldn't type after coming back from the bar. i had too many martinis. but finals just got over with so i had to celebrate.
you know one day when she applies for a good nice job after graduating from UPenn and does not misspell this little word because of me i bet she won't hate me as much ;P

I don't think lambasting some one because of a misspelled word is exactly fair. However, I do think that these kinds of scores should be taken with a grain of salt. I don't know whether Carlotta needed Financial Aid or not, but internationals who get in ED are either full-freight payers or their stats are simply incredible, including their SATs. Now, the SATs are good, but they for sure don't look incredible, so I am inclined to believe that she was talking about admission without Financial Aid, a totally different business. And even if she did ask for Financial Aid, the fact that she is from Italy might have helped (although not much, for sure). Universities like diversity within the ranks of their international students, so a Western-European might have the advantage of scarcity (of Western European applicants, naturally). All in all, while I am saying that no conclussions should be derived from Carlotta's experience with Wharton, neither am I trying to belittle her achievement - getting into Wharton is hard enough for anyone.

@bogororo

How is your experience in Amherst??
Is it everything that you expected of it?

He doesn't need to have SAT for those colleges.
If he keeps a good academic standing, acceptance into these colleges is almost guaranteed.

from mainland, only several students can shoot above 700 in CR, and not so many over 600. Most students accepted into ivies and Stan/MIT range from 550-630 or without SAT.
A score over 700 on CR can almost guarantee him a place in a top 15 national university with a lot of aid since it's extremely rare in China.

ok i was just waiting for you to be done with the whole discussion...

First of all, MARTINIBLUEX.. don't you have anything better to do in your life than to discuss the spelling of ONE freakin word written about a random international girl?
Then, do you even imagine how hard is for each international student to leave their own countries, find a freakin college to get in the USA and do their impossible to get in?

I won't even continue to argue because it's so not worth..

Let me tell you this.. Drink less, get a life or find a girl to spend some time with. And please, I don't hate you. Believe me.. I wish I knew some more english to tell you exactly what I think.. but you know I AM AN INTERNATIONAL so...

...and for those who were interested... No i did not apply for finantial aid. I'm not rich, I asked my Italian bank for a loan.. I have 30 years to pay it back.

..thanks bogororo.
