Any hope for financial aid?

I do not have any need based financial aid, but I have a 4.0 unweighted gpa and a long list of extra curriculars. I do not live in CA, but would love to attend UC Berkely or UCLA. My parents do not want to pay $50,000 a year when I could go to a fairly good college in my state for much less. Any advice for scholarships and what do you think would be a possibility for lowering the tuition price?

None. The UC system is broke and takes out of state students for the extra funds. Sorry.

Nothing wrong with giving those schools a go on you list, AFTER you have selected affordable schools that you know your famiily can afford and that will take you. Like buying some lottery tickets after paying the bills.

I don’t know what the UCs have for top OOS applicants. My son’s friend was accepted to UCLA, as an OOSer and he did get a small merit award, but it barely put a dent in the cost. The UC schools are very expensive on an OOS basis.

OOS students can qualify for the Regents and Chancellor’s scholarships [UC Berkeley Financial Aid and Scholarships Office: Undergraduates » Types of Aid » Scholarships » Regents’ and Chancellor’s Scholarship FAQ](http://students.berkeley.edu/finaid/undergraduates/RCfaq.htm) but they require Ivy level stats to be competitive and I think I saw they were worth $1K.

^^^

lol…worth $1k? Hardly worth mentioning. The family isn’t likely going to say, “well, we won’t pay $50k, but we’ll pay $49k.” lol

there’s really no advice for affording Cal if your parents won’t pay. Private scholarships are hard to get, and usually only for FROSH year. And, the ones that are for FOUR years are usually for low income students…so not for you.

If you want to apply just to find out what will happen, then fine. BUT assume that you’re not going to get any reasonable money help to attend.

What are your stats? If they’re high enough, then maybe a lower-tier UC may give you some merit. also, some other schools will give you merit.

How much will your parents pay? Ask them for a total budget of how much they’ll pay. Ask if they’ll pay the full COA of your state’s flagship…that could be $30k+ per year depending on your state.

What is your home state?

“Where would you recommend to go for undergrad business school? I live in Wisconsin and my parents dont want to pay $50k a year although I would love to go somewhere fun like CA. I have a 4.0 in many AP classes, 27 ACT, and numerous extra curricular activities. Any suggestions?”

With an ACT 27, i doubt you’d be accepted to UCLA or Cal.

To get merit at other good schools, you’d need higher test scores.

Most parents would not find ‘somewhere fun like CA’ a good enough reason to go out of state at double the cost.

With a 27 ACT and your long list of extracurriculars and AP classes you have a decent shot at UW-Madison.
