Hi guys, I'm new here. I have a 3.1 GPA, ive taken all honors and AP classes and a 2190 SAT with 800 in Math, Im takin my SAT II's in December. Im co captain of my HS swim team, corresponding secretary of a club, Ive been volunteering at a hospital for 2 years now and i play the violin. Is there any possibility I can get into any of the like top 60 ranked colleges, anything like penn state or pitt.

Yes you can; you have a solid SAT outline even with a low GPA. You can get into Penn State or Pitt if you have either a solid interview, an outstanding essay, good rec’s, or they already liked your application to begin with. Good Luck!

idk pitt well but
2190 for penn state psh theyll overlook the gpa with that sat
i think youre in

You will be OK for most of the schools ranked 30-60 since your weighed GPA seems to be close to 4.0 and your ECs are fine.

I bet you’ll get into both!

:/ that is my weighed GPA.

If you have a 3.1 weighted, probably not. I know somebody who got rejected from Pitt with good (but not as good as yours) tests scores and a 3.8 uw. An uw GPA that is in the 2s is just too low for these schools. You have to remember that they will see applicants with slightly lower test scores but much higher GPAs, why should they accept you who did well on one test date over a person who worked hard for that GPA for their entire high school career.

Have you gotten all A’s in math and taken calc b/c (at least) and multi-variable (hopefully)? If so, notwithstanding all of your C’s (and maybe a few D’s), you might be able to sell Pitt or Penn on taking a chance on a lopsided STEM person. You also might consider applying to some large state schools (that take lots of applicants and have more flexibility) with good STEM programs like Illinois, Purdue, Maryland, and Ohio State.

well i dont have alot of c’s, 1 d+ in precalculus and a c+ in honors biology and c+ in ap chemistry. all my other grades are just flat B’s and B+'s

and my unweighted is just a 3.00 flat, im currently taking bc calculus.

Your GPA is just too low for the test schools to realistically compensate. Your best option would be to apply for both the main campuses (knowing that they are high reaches) as well as branch schools and then transfer from a branch school to a main campus after a year or two.

Listen to ArtsyGirl.

Penn State and Pittsburgh are definitely worth applying to, you have a good shot!

If possible, though, you should raise your GPA. Your test scores are much, much better than that GPA and they make it look like you haven’t been trying in school!

Well, thanks for the input

Quick update, accepted to Penn State Main Campus for the School of Engineering. Pitt requested my midyear grades.
