Any Hope?

I LOVE Dartmouth, and I want to apply regular decision, but I'm concerned about my chances of acceptance. However if my chances of getting in are slim to none, I may want to apply to another school for ED 2.

What do you think?
Academics(at a very competitive prep school):
GPA UW-3.73, W-3.9
My junior and senior year grades are not nearly as good as my freshman and sophomore grades are unweighted, but almost as good weighted.
SAT: 2310 (760 CR, 780 M, 770 W)
SAT II: 790-Math II, 750-projected english

ECs
President of school's Model Congress & MC regional position
congressional internship in local and dc offices
politics summer program
Mock Trial Captain
Student council vp& grade rep
basketball-hs and club (would play club at D)
clarinet-orchestra

Thanks!

you have the scores (disregarding your projected SAT II score.. why do people project scores?) to get in, but dartmouth isn't as stats-oriented as many on cc would like you to think. you'd have to prove to the college why you'd make campus a better place...if your essay isn't stellar or if adcoms can't get a sense of who you are, I'd suggest applying elsewhere. good luck :)

Your GPA is all right, your SAT's are great.
Your EC's looks solid: leadership and focused experienced.

You have a very good shot.

Stress anything you have done that goes beyond your local high school or community. The Ivies are looking for those who can distinguish themselves at a level above the local. Your stats are solid, but make sure you can stand out from the crowd.

thanks! My essay is solid, and my ECs extend well beyond the high school level (and my passion is sincere), so my greatest concern is my gpa. While it is okay overall, my junior/senior year gpa is not: 3.5 unweighted, 3.9 weighted. Do colleges place greater weight on junior and senior year grades?

Generally they do place more emphasis on the final two years. But it also depends on the reason for the drop. Either you or your guidance counselor should attempt to obviate any potential questions in your application.

Thanks
any other opinions on how the downward trend will affect my chances?

also, does anyone know how dartmouth calculates gpa for the academic index? do they use end of year grades if my transcript includes trimester grades? would they count end of year grades for 9, 10, 11 and then first trimester grades for 12? and does A-=4 or 3.66?
thanks!

An A- is a 3.66. (Standard for most schools). Only a few (like UMich) re-calculate your GPA so that there are no B plusses or B minuses (just B's).
