My son N is about to begin the final year of the International Baccalaureate diploma, including music level higher. His grades and predicted IB scores are excellent, his SAT scores strong.

He is a multi-instrumentalist with some classical piano training and is mainly interested in contemporary music production, the Clive Davis program at NYU in particular. Berklee, Drexel, Belmont (though, the Baptist element concerns us) and MTSU.

Any other IB or international parents or students out there navigating the music school admissions/audition process?

Hi there. I am not the parent of an IB student specifically, but my son’s school was in the process of converting to IB after its former existence as a magnet school for gifted/talented students.

I am a bit familiar with Clive Davis/NYU and Belmont-Curb School of Music, though my son attended University of Michigan production program called PAT - part production, part electronic composition. He also visited the Indiana University’s Jacobs SOM Recording Arts program - another particularly well known program for production.

Did you have specific questions in mind? Maybe if you were to repost your thread with respect to questions/info about the type of program sought instead of the IB history you’d get better feedback.

In terms of grades/scores etc. - very relevant at the UMich program and in my son’s case won him an academic scholarship as well as a music scholarship. Your son’s strong program will be a boon for Clive Davis too if the quality of portfolio supports his candidacy. High stats can garner generous merit awards at Belmont also I believe.

If he applied to IU/Jacobs, a particular combo of stats-scores result in automatic entrance scholarships and OOS pricing is quite reasonable – that info is dated to 2008 however, so you’d want to check to see if they still do automatic entrance scholarships academically.

I wouldn’t be too concerned about the Baptist element at Belmont…my understanding is that it really doesn’t have any kind of bearing on the music school. Excellent city for production specialists to work in ;)

Let me know if I can assist you further. Note that even IB upper level music is not likely to exempt your son from theory at places like UMich…each school has its own degree of rigor in terms of theory. Just make sure that with that final paper and the heavy workload of IB your son has time to produce an exceptionally polished portfolio for those types of programs, because above all else, it’s the portfolio that gets the admit.

Best wishes.

Thanks for this info!

We just got back from a month long visit to the US that included lots and lots of college visits. We got a really good feel for all the the cities and programs offered.

Almost all the schools were pretty vague about their application of IB scores towards admission requirements and placing out of required general education (non-music) courses. My guess is it’s still pretty new and assessed on a individual basis. We did learn MTSU has an IB scholarship and high scores can usually be counted as credit at NYU.

I don’t have any specific questions, more just asking if there are any other international students/parents out there. Most kids at my son’s school here in Rome will go to the UK for university , so we are kind of outliers here.
