So we’re planning to start a political club at school. Any ideas what we should do in it (especially during meetings)
Some ideas we have are:
-having a congressman/representative to speak
-community service
-volunteering at campaigns (but next year is an off year)
-discussion about issues/policy (need to expand on this)
sounds pretty basic so far any ideas would help. And would a inclusive club gain more members than say a young democrats or young republican club?
Great Idea!
I helped start ours last year, although I do not have much to do with the planning anymore
Here’s what I think works
Small Groups- we started small, but as we grew to 10 plus it becomes less fun to debate, so we split up into parties sometimes and debate an issue before our party presents to the others
Pizza- Our leader brings pizza every time and people seem to enjoy that lol. We pay 1 dollar per slice
Community Service should be optional if people want it on their applications, but lets be real nobody wants to do that
We also put tons and tons of flyers up which got a lot of people interested,
We unusally have a topic we are going to discuss before each meeting so it doesnt get out of hand.
I’m not part of a political club, but I’m interested in politics and have some ideas.
-Newspaper: If your school has a newspaper, maybe you guys could request a column in the paper to share your thoughts on any news surrounding politics or even the club itself.
-Debate: I’m expecting the political club to grow and eventually divide itself into factions in accordance with political positions. Perhaps you can use this opportunity to have the factions debate each other.
-Fun projects: Maybe have a mock presidential election? (this one is a bit imaginative)
At the center of the club should be discussions about the issues. You could talk about newly developing issues like Trump’s cabinet nominations during certain days while devoting other days to things more general like military spending.
