Any ideas for a Junior (safety schools)

I am currently a Junior at a highly competitive public school in the suburbs of Manhattan.

I know what kind of school I'll apply to for my reaches, but I am a little lost when it comes to safety schools. Any ideas would be very much appreciated!

For a school, I am only looking in New England, New York, D.C. I want to be either in a big city, or with close access to one. (So not something like Penn State, in the middle of nowhere).

Here are my stats/bio:

My current GPA is a 95.4 weighted.

I have yet to take my SATs, but I am expecting about a 2150 when all is said and done, but hopefully a little higher (like a 2200).

I have taken the hardest course load my school possible at each grade level. This amounts to 11 total honors classes and about 7 or 8 AP classes.

My extracurriculars are dominated by two varsity sports (volleyball and basketball). I play basketball year round on a national AAU team, so my entire spring/summer is spent traveling to tournaments every weekend. I have been on varsity basketball since I was a freshman, and volleyball since I was a sophomore. Senior year I will be captain for both teams. I've been looked at by some division 3 schools for basketball, but am not interested in playing in college.

Other than that, I am on our Campus Congress, I am a tutor, I go on a service project trip to Appalachia every year (monthly meetings, so its a year round thing). I am on Student Council, Relay for Life. I also have a lot of more minor extracurriculars that I do but aren't that important.

My passion is politics. I pretty much know that I want to major in political science. I plan on attending law school after college.

I know that this is really lengthy and everything, but really if anyone has any ideas at all, that would be great! Thank you so much!

What is your financial situation?

American U might be a good low match for you.

We can’t give safeties until we know the finance situation. It’s not a safety if you can’t afford to go.

Test scores are difficult to predict.
Should you not be happy with the future SAT results, consider taking the ACT as well.

However, actual test scores and your cost constraints will help others help you better.

I’m very fortunate, I will not have have any financial constraints when it comes to choosing a school.

Great that you don’t have to settle for state school, but you should still try to get your SAT scores a little higher when you take the test.

American U
Georgetown- Reach
George Washington
Johns Hopkins- Reach

Looking at some major northeast cities off the top of my head:

NY - Columbia (reach for everyone), NYU (strong chance to get in), Fordham (safety)

DC - Georgetown (reach for everyone), GW (strong chance to get in), American (safety)

Boston - Harvard, MIT (reach for everyone), BC, Tufts (good chance to get in), BU, Northeastern (safety)

Philadelphia - UPenn, Swarthmore (reach for everyone), Villanoava, Haverford (strong chance to get in), Drexel (safety)

Baltimore - Hopkins (good chance to get in), Loyola-MD, Goucher (safety)

You might also look at Tulane as a safety (Not in New England, but in New Orleans - the school has non binding early action)

Boston College (reach)
Northeastern University (match)
Boston University (safety)

Yeshiva Univesity (reach)

What would you guys suggest for someone who has the same general interests–politics, Northeast-- as OP, but slightly different stats?

3.8 GPA, 2300 on SAT (740M/780CR/780W), taken once.

I’m taking 4 APs this year (junior year) and will take 3 APs and 2 post-AP courses (in Latin and math) next year.

I’ll be a 4 year varsity player on one team, am in a selective leadership program at school, head two big clubs (we do faculty presentations, bring in speakers etc.), and have acted in/written several shows (drama) at school.

Outside of school I am a part of an activism group which meets once a week and does a lot of awareness actions in addition to nitty gritty work with one of the youth homeless shelters in the city (I was the point person for this).

My financial situation isn’t as great as OP’s, but I still don’t apply for any of the financial aid for those who make less than 60,000 a year.

Like OP, I love politics, and would appreciate a fairly liberal campus because I am gay (so religious schools are out for me).
I also prefer the broader Northeast (north of DC, west of the great lakes) because it makes traveling easier money-wise (I could take a bus instead of a plane).

I was thinking UMBC because it’s near DC and is totally doable financially, although I know very little about it. Besides that I don’t really know of any safeties for me.
Any help would be appreciated!

There’s a 3.3 GPA thread on the site. It should have some good ideas.

GW is only a match if you can afford their pricetag. American is more of a match however they attract many students like you with possibly better stats because of their location in D.C.

Fordham, BU, Northeastern, GW, American, Goucher would be reasonable options. If you are willing to expand your geographic area, also consider Tulane (in New Orleans) which gets a lot of kids from the northeast. I know that Fordham and Tulane have non-binding EA which is always good for a safety school.

holy cross and tufts would be good choices.
