Hi my daughter is an avg student, who has alot of potential. She would like to be near a city and be on the east coast somewhere either northeast or mid atlantic. We live in CT and our funds are tight. I was looking mostly at state schools, but her GPA is 3.2 currently and her SATs of 540, 540 and 580 will most likely not get her in to University of CT. She has almost no extracurricular either. I would really like her to be near a city. She wants a diverse pop and is pretty liberal. Doesn't like the school scene at all or drinking--she is a little bohemian and likes that kind of thing. If anyone has any ideas, I would appreciate it. All the schools taht she can get into, don't seem her thing at all. Most are tucked away in rural or suburban places that she would hate.

What about one of the satellite UConn campuses? Are they as difficult to be accepted? That would be less expensive than (even) the SUNYs since you are OOS.

A place like Western Connecticut State in Danbury would cost about $16,000 per year for a resident in-state student (this includes tuition, fees, room and board). The college requires a minimum B- average and a 1000 SAT score (Math and CR only) so your daughter looks like a fairly certain admit. The SUNYs run about $22,000 for an OOS student. Most of the SUNYs are located in small Upstate towns and cities, but Purchase and Westbury are fairly close to Manhattan.

Temple seems like a good choice. Her GPA and SATs are slightly below the average for last years class, but she would likely get in. The big issue is that it’s $30,000 a year tuition+room and board out of state, and she would not receive merit aid.

How about Eugene Lang College (Greenwich Village), if you can get enough aid to make Manhattan affordable. It’s very liberal and diverse. It wouldn’t hurt if at least one of her test scores were higher and she can crank out a strong essay.

Thanks, Yes I was going to have her apply to Western and Southern. I am familiar with southern as I am getting my master’s there now. I think Western has a slightly better rep for undergrad.

oops, I apologize. I am a little confused about this format and thought my replies would show below the original response.
Anyway, thank you all. You had some great ideas. I appreciate them all and if anyone can think of more that would be great too.

Manhattanville (right near Suny Purchase) also is a liberal school. The city of White Plains is close by and there is train access nearby to NYC.
