My D is looking for ideas for a month long internship all seniors do at their school in May. Has anyone done anything similar or have any good ideas? Or, better yet, does anyone have a position to offer in New Jersey, near NYC? She is a great student, off to HYP next year and has an interest in finance, economics, Wall Street among other areas. They are not allowed to accept pay so she'd be exchanging her time for exposure to new areas. Could be a month or something shorter. Thanks!

What other steps is your D taking to find herself a position?

Welcome to CC. Realistically, I'm thinking she'll do better if she looks directly at industry publications or websites that will lead her directly to businesses and corporations in the geographic locations or professional fields she would like to explore. Has she looked through the Wall Street Journal, simply to list some firms, and then write them a letter to propose what she'd like to do there, followed up by phone or email contacts?
Has she scanned Craigslist.com in Manhattan or New Jersey for ideas?

Can you teach her how to make these kinds of contacts while she's still at home? Or perhaps she's doing that already, but your post is very wide and a bit vague.

Networking is always a good idea. Do you have a stockbroker who may be able to get her a hitch into his local office? Or how about a lawyer or bank branch friend and working in his office? And of course there are also church/synagog/other non-profit agencies who are always looking for volunteers. I am assuming you want the internship to be close by so that she will be able to live at home as she is only a hs senior.

I also live in north Jersey near NYC. Drop me a PM, I think I can get you some information.
