I've looked at NDtoday but I just wanted more personal opinion

for math I have Hu
for intro to chem I have, Lappin
for spanish I have, Topash-Rios (no info on her on NDtoday)
and for PE I have, Heslett, Jackie (no info either)

any opinion is greatly appreciated

also, when can I change classes and stuff? and what are some good reasons for changing classes if your professors isn't for you or something?

BEI HU! He's the man. Horrific teacher. When I woke up one day at the end of class with a huge puddle of drool all over my desk, I stopped going, and instead taught myself and snuck in at the end of class to hand in my homework. Not the best strategy - I ended up with a C+, but I'm not a math guy. Nice guy though, but his accent is too hard to get through, and seeing as I just wasn't interested at all... well, yea.

Andrea Topash-Rios is an amazing woman and an amazing professor. I was lucky enough to have her for two semesters and can tell you that she is a truly talented teacher and a caring person. She was ALWAYS willing to give extra help. She cooked for her students. She often spent time with me after class, advising me about the Spanish major and getting to know me. She's a great person, you're very lucky. (More practically, her tests aren't bad, there's not too much homework, and attendance isn't too, too strict - but get to know her, you won't want to miss class).

I don't know much about Lappin, but he's definitively better than your other option, Scheidt. Everyone who had the latter's class skipped it and went to Lappin's to learn more chemistry. So yea, take from that what you will.

you don't have jackie heslett for PE. that's jus somebody from the P.E. department. within the first week of classes, you will attend a PE intro session after which you will select the three units of gym you take this semester

options include handball, raquetball, golf, contemporary topics (two-unit course on health issues), CPR training, yoga, dance classes, weightlifting, fencing, running and jogging, and maybe a few others

there are two lappins listed on NDtoday.com's teacher evaluations. (though I think it might be a mistake) got pretty tepid reviews, but it's a gen-chem class, so don't sweat it.

thanks SO much kevdude!

I actually hoped that I would have Prof. Wong for math instead of Prof. Hu, but my schedule didn't work out that way (my first choice seminar class is same time as prof. wong's class). Kinda concerned now tho... is prof. Hu that hard? how are his tests and homework? hrmm...

Ooo I'm excited to get to know prof. topash-rios now! I was afraid b/c she wasn't on ndtoday. thanks for that info. really really appreciate it

according to NDtoday, Lappin isn't the easiest teacher, but then it's chemistry so.. oh well. (but you're right that he's better than most other chem profs according to NDtoday). but it seems like Prof. Hartland is a very good chem prof and I was hoping maybe I could take his class? my schedule works out in a way that I can switch to his class, but I know that advisors won't change classes b/c of professors... is this advisable? and if yes or maybe is there a way?

oh BTW, how come my schedule doesn't show FYComposition class? and what's tutorial classes?

/Kevdude! I can't thank you enough! :)

irish_hopeful, thanks for that info!

should I be worried about swim test? I mean I can float and swim and stuff (but maybe not conventional freestyle, butterfly, etc way?), but dunno. my father (PE professor) thinks maybe I should train and prep......... (seriously, Asian parents go crazy at the sound of the word "test")

also, I'm not sure what you mean by it's a gen-chem class, so don't sweat it. is it because it's a hard class or b/c it doesn't really matter? (only taking this as part of ALP2... sigh)

again, thanks

Advisors generally don't let you switch classes very much at all first semester, especially for professor ratings or too tough a schedule - you are basically stuck with what you get unless there's an actual overlap of classes. Most people would have scheduled their first semester different, but at least everyone else goes through it. Don't whine, you won't get any sympathy lol.

Like I said, Math wasn't my thing. I really couldn't possibly have cared less, and knew all I needed to do was pass and I would be done with Math forever. I studied and did the homework, but it didn't bother me too much when I pulled low Bs and Cs. On the other hand, I'm pretty sure Hu is pretty accessible. Something tells me he doesn't get out of the office too much (you'll see what I mean on the first day. I recommend noting his outfit - if he ever switches from his black socks and sandals, you know something drastic has happened), and he's definitely very enthusiastic about his subject, as well as much smarter than people give him credit for, because his accent is just that thick.

If you actually feel like getting good grades, it'll require some hard work and some visits to his office hours, but if you're resigned to simply passing, it shouldn't be that much of a problem.

Prof. Wong is amazing. If you have a chance, take a class from him. He will definitely keep you entertained!
