Do you like it? Is it true that most people there smoke/do drugs? I'm completely not into that and would rather be around similar people.

Also, what GPA did you have to get in?

Every college has smokers/druggies.

But in comparison, is it more than other schools?

You should really visit New Paltz. The town itself has a lot of old hippies. The students at New Paltz give off more of a hippy vibe than at other colleges, very liberal, tree-hugging, etc. If you don’t enjoy being around people like that it might not be the college for you. But every community of 18-22 year olds is going to have a high percentage of substance abusers; you just have to find friends that share your values.

*New Paltz.

I don’t agree with the whole “old hippies” stereotype. There are, yes, but there are many more who aren’t (Including myself). It’s definitely a small town. I think it’s a bit too small for my liking. But that’s just me. And visit every other college out there, and you will see many college students smoke and do drugs. New Paltz isn’t really any different.

sjmoon, forgot to add that I think NP is one of the nicest college towns, the area is beautiful and the downtown stores and cafes are very cool. And I didn’t mean to imply that all the townies are old hippies; it’s a tolerant kind of place, lots of diversity.

Thanks guys.

Why did you all choose to go to NP?

And I’m not sure what “tree huggers” is defined as. I mean, I’m a vegetarian and recycle. So not sure where that places me haha.

New Paltz is a mixture of all types and what’s nice is that the liberal and tolerant atmosphere allows everyone to be who they are. There is some drug use but many who do not. My son is a student here and he does not do drugs. Some of his friends do but most do not. I don’t think you have to worry about it. There are a lot of smart people coming into New Paltz that take their studies seriously. Also a lot of vegetarians and vegans who are into their health. It’s the kind of place where anyone can fit in. My son transferred here for the down to earth environment and he is very happy.

My daughter, who doesn’t do drugs and almost never drinks, is very happy at New Paltz (junior year now).

To be honest, I decided on New Paltz because it was close (but not too close) to home, and I’ve heard a lot of good things about it being a good school for an Education major such as myself.
Before deciding to attend New Paltz, I never visited the school before so I guess I took the risk, as my first time seeing the school was at orientation. Like I said, New Paltz is just a bit too small for my taste, and it rains way too often, but the campus and view of the mountains is quite nice. The professors, advisors, and students I’ve met so far are all very friendly and it being my first semester there, I’ve enjoyed it.
