Hi! I'm thinking about transferring to UMICH (yes ... I do need to make a decision... soon) and I was wondering if I could get some inside input on either of these departments (specifically screenwriting and ethnography).

Thanks

Anthropology - one of the most respected and recognized programs in the nation. Very very very good. Very. Yes, Very.

Film studies - I heard this was great as well, but I am not sure. You can try asking on skoogO.com. It's Michigan's official discussion forum.

(yes, I am advertising)

The university sells the screenwriting program pretty hard and they have some pretty impressive guest speakers. The actual faculty haven't done that much work but it really is a studies department, the department isn't there to teach craft. Also, it's a department that doesn't like to take transfers and if they do take you the prereqs will put you at least a year behind. The screenwriting classes are closed to non majors as well. Michigan really is a great school for writers though. The english department's creative writing program is allegedly more selective than the business school. The MFA fiction program is top 5 and many of those resources are availible to you as an undergrad (if you're aggressive). Oyamo teaches playwriting and is extraordinary and the Hopwood awards are the best funded undergraduate writing award in the nation.
