My D is interested in Emory but is wondering about the quality of the vocal studios there? Anybody have input? Are they looking to beef that department up? It appears they primarily have a visiting professor teaching and that's it. We are also wondering about any performance opportunities. THANKS.

I have taken voice lessons from a full time voice instructor here, and my experiences have been great. However, most students in the music department usually study music in addition to their core major (business…biology/premed…etc). If your D attends Emory for the sole purpose of attending the vocal studios here, then Id advise her to attend a different institution that solely focuses on its vocal department…

I currently take voice lessons at Emory, and I’m involved in 3 choirs here. I agree with the previous post that most people at Emory who are music majors are double majors with something else as well, but that’s not always the case. And the music professors and classes I’ve come in contact with so far here, have all been excellent! I think Emory is a great place for someone to study music who is also interested in getting the benefit of a liberal arts education.
As for performance, there is a musical theater group called Ad Hoc, student recitals, technique classes which do perodics shows and performances, and superb choirs!! Dr. Nelson is a wonderful conductor, and the Concert Choir hastoured throughout the world.

Thanks for the input. Is there only one voice teacher at Emory right now? It looked like Bradley Howard is a visiting professor so I didn’t know if he is going back to wherever he is visiting from.

I know of at least three voice teachers at Emory. I am currently taking lessons from Dr. Stephanie Adrian. As to Professor Howard’s future plans, I couldn’t tell you.
