It is kind of late into the american college admission season but does anyone have thoughts on a gap year for next year?

Personally I do need to take some time off due to personal circumstances but I am very lost on how to plan a gap year. Could anyone share their experiences?

I'm taking one right now, mainly to apply to US Uni's. Right now, i've been working for a charity, whilst taking my SAT's and sending off my applications. Then you've just gotta plan your own things. I for example will be visiting several countries and taking a course at New York Film Academy.

A lot of International friends here at Penn took a periods. Some - like me - had a almost half a year between military service and high-school. Others were just bumming around until they figured out what they wanted to do with their lives.

I dont think so......gap yr has not -ve point in the adms.........n I m takin one...........n to tell u this is both very bad as well as very good period......

Depends on what you mean with your question.
If you are applying while still in high school the schools you are applying to usually don't know that you are planning on having a gap year. If you are applying during the gap year, they will of course take into account senior year and any school leaving exams. They will also know what you are doing during your gap year: if you just travel, work or do common community service it will neither help nor hurt you. Just goofing off will certainly hurt you, and if you do something really unusual and purposeful, it will help your application.
If you intended to ask: will I be viewed any differently just because I decided to take a gap year the answer is no. Just spend that time wisely.

But how does one spend time wisely during a gap year? For the people that have done or are doing a gap year how did you actually plan your gap year? How do you arrange trips to Africa to help kids with AIDS, etc.? I mean you just don't show up and tell the staff that you'd like to help right? Clearly there must be some sort of organization that you have to sign up with and stuff? What are some of these organizations?

Hi... I was just going through this post and I this situation applies to me. I am an ICSE student. I completed my schooling this June. Scored a decent 92% overall and i have taken a year off to apply to schools and take my SATs. ive scored 2000 on my SAT reasoning and awaiting my subject scores.

Coming to the real thing, I think that if you use your gap time wisely, it helps a lot for your admissions. And I dont think that you need to travel to Africa to help people affected with AIDS. Just be practical. I can't afford any such trips. So what I did was that I took up a teaching position in my school. Currently, I teach students of 8/9/10 Computer Science. And since Computer science is the major that i intend to do, I think that it should help me in my college application.

I urge you guys to take some time off only if you plant to use it really well.
