Any internationals studying Animals in USA?

Hi there,
I plan to do a Zoology / Biology major or similar (then pHD) in the USA. I am from the UK.
My question is this, what options are available after doing such a degree after college?
Jobs as a wildlife biologist / conservationist and any similar job are all public sector, which requires immediate US citizenship (green card + 5 years after).
My dream was to come to the US, study animals, then go into work as a biologist/conservationist or similar, but anything along those lines is for the government (conservation work being nonprofit...) hence US citizenship!
What are other internationals studying these degrees going on to do?
Besides work in a zoo (which I do not prefer) I can't think of any... Surely there must be others in this situation.
Any help is much appreciated,
Many thanks,
George

There are no jobs in the US for international wildlife biologists. Besides the citizenship requirements and low pay, it’s a popular major among Americans because it doesn’t need math so you will be competing against more people. Why not use your rigorous British education to your advantage and pursue an engineering, physical sciences or finance degree? Britain is the birthplace of Maxwell, Faraday, Stirling, Smith, Kelvin, where Marx and Engels worked, where the railroad and mechanical engineering were invented, and the place of the first gas light system in the world. It would be a waste of your British education to not pursue quantitative studies.

There are barely any jobs in the world for biologists in general. I’m an international who was previously in the “more employable” area of biochemistry and molecular biology, and it’s still worthless.

You should really just copy+paste your schtick rather than writing up a new multi-paragraph screed every time someone posts a thread.

might you be interested in becoming a veterinarian?

Thanks for the replies. I know alternative careers are an option. I have dreamed of living in the US since I was young, and since visiting there its only stronger. Though I know how much easier it would be to stay here in the UK I do not wish to. My interests are in animal (specifically canid) behavior, and with the dream of living in the US I’m just looking to combine the two… Since meeting wolf biologists in the US I saw that as an ideal. Really I’m just wondering what other internationals looking to work with animals do. There must be internationals who come to the USA for the wildlife, studying wildlife biology for example, but what they do afterwards I don’t know.
Is the only way to pursue this to get any job I can for several years until I’ve achieved citizenship/green card?
Thanks

I know a girl from my highschool that went on to study marine biology, I think in Coral Gables (FL). I saw her last year and she loved it, and was planning to intern with the Smithsonian Institute of Tropical Research, quite awesome I think. But haven’t heard from her since then. And yes, I should think that maybe being a vet might be similar to what you want and might give you more “transferable skills”… just something for you to think about

good luck:)

There seems to be a good deal more activity in the UK in types of areas that interest you, especially in terms of university- and non-university-based training courses in applied ethology: [Dog Training and Animal Behaviour Courses](http://www.animal-job.co.uk/dogtraininganimalbehaviourcourses.html)
So why come to the US? Have you thought about Canada as an alternative?

Also, check out this website for suggestions about careers in animal behavior:

Thank you. I am aware of the options available here in the UK. Yes I have considered Canada, though the immigration laws are similar to the USA are they not? Same with state jobs like Wildlife Biologist… Currently I am looking at other options than staying in the UK, my interest is in Canids, wolves, jackals, coyotes etc. all of which are present in the USA (thus present for research and conservation) and not in the UK. Just struggling to find a way of pursuing an animal related career in the US, besides zoos and similar organisations that do not appeal…

have you considered investment banking in london, then hiring a private researcher?
