I was wondering if there are any intl students this year who got into Midd with a substantial financial aid. I personally am wait listed and am wondering what my chances are in getting off the waitlist with a scholarship (im guessing very very very very slim).

I asked for substantial aid and was waitlistd too(intl).

I also asked for substantial aid and was waitlisted. I thought they were supposed to be completely need-blind to internationals… maybe they changed their policy? Bad year for FA internationals in general, 3 waitlists and 3 rejects for me, and some got something like 8 waitlists. Grinnell sent me a letter to let them know when my financial situation improves. @#%^$@^%#$%@# I’ve pretty much given up Midd cause I really need the aid. C’est la vie.

I asked for aid and was wait-listed too. I’ve given up Midd as well as the wait-list process is need-aware even for US citizens.

Lol i got 3 rejections and 4 waitlists too…hahaha…so dis does mean i would’ve been in widout the aid.

yes same boat 2 rejections and waitlist at Midd…but I’m in a weird situation where a few schools wanted me to apply as freshman, others as transfer, so I have a few schools left to hear from

erebus, just out of curiosity, do you expect your financial situation to improve in the next couple of months or were they saying ‘hey, take a gap year and re-apply?’…it just seems an odd thing to say to a waitlistee…usually a couple of months won’t make a financial difference!!

Haha well canadianemigre I can always rob a bank or two… j/k they were talking about me receiving money from other sponsors/scholarships. Not likely though. Here’s a part of the letter I got:

“Because Grinnell has limited financial resources for international student financial aid, you may have been placed on our Alternate List for financial reasons. If your financial situation has improved (e.g., you locate a sponsor willing to support you), we strongly encourage you to email or fax that information to us immediately. This new information may aid us in offering you admission and financial assistance.”

I love how Grinnell’s really honest and straightforward about this… :D

yeah. intl students asking for finaid is really unfortunate this year. I’m waitlisted at 2 places including midd and i think there is no way that I’m going to get through. as erebus said, c’est la vie

Yeah i got da same reply 4m grinnell…

Waitlisted too and needing LOTS of Finaid.

Oh well…

Given the cost of getting to the US plus the cost of school there, maybe the idea of college outside my home country was a bit silly to start with.

Hey guys, I’m an intl student applying for class of 2014. I’ve always assumed that Midd was need-blind to intl student and meet 100% of demonstrated need, but judging from this thread, it seems this is no longer the case…?

On their website, it states: In the case of international students, Middlebury follows a need-blind admissions policy to the extent that financial resources allow.

So I’m thinking, Midd is no longer really 100% needblind to intl? Really disappointing to me since there are only 6-7 schools that are needblind to intl. Can anyone clarify the needblind stance of Midd, and possible if Amherst/Williams are affected also?

Good luck with all the waitlist!

From what I understand, at this point, there are only seven schools who are need blind and meet full need for all applicants:
Harvard
Yale
Princeton
Dartmouth
Williams
Amherst
MIT

(and since they are all private schools, they can certainly determine what defines “need” as they see fit. However, there are no loans at these schools at this time either, so loans would only be needed to meet whatever amount over what the school decides the estimated family contribution is.)

I could be totally wrong, but I thought Amherst was not on that list. Arcadia, any knowledge on this?

Admittedly, I found the info by google search and it being listed on Wikipedia – not exactly fool proof – or fool worthy for that matter. But they usually correct information pretty accurately. But like all schools at this point, Ivies among them and large endowments (shrinking or otherwise) not with standing, this might very well change in the next few years.

Aininor - check out Grinnell College. I don’t see the language “need blind” for internationals, but it appears to be that or close from looking at their website.
