I'm gonna be a freshman this fall and play rugby. I know this 100% depends on the school so for you how is rugby viewed at your school? Do people go to the games or even care about it at all? Are there stereotypes about rugby players? And if you have played in college what should I know going in besides rules because I have played before?

Rugby is one of the very few organized sports teams at Reed. I’ve never been to a game, so I don’t know how well attended they are, but rugby players definitely have reputations as partiers. (with good reason, I’d say) :)

Disclaimer: I played rugby at at women’s college.

Our rugby team is the closest we have to a sorority: they are (in)famous for their Saturday night socials! The stereotype is that every member of the team has made out with every other member at some point. Many student quit playing (but still support the team) because the injury rates are too high. There are almost no spectators at games, except for a few friends of the players.

Been to two schools and at both there were rugby teams. It isn’t the most spectated sport, it’s more of a cult favorite as it were, but they seem to have great camaraderie. I don’t know of any stereotypes regarding them.

I agree with previous posters; few spectators at the women’s games, more at men’s, but those who are on my school’s teams and their friends are very intense about it. Reputation for lots of partying is completely true, even on our “dry” (haha) campus.
