Was totally flabbergasted and embarassed last term when I visited my son's room, at home I'm always on his back so his room is kept a little decent but I was totally shocked to see his side of the room in the dorm especailly since he has a room mate who is much more organised than him.

What do you guys do to keep your room clean or a little decent?

Get an OCD roommate that doesn't mind cleaning up both sides of the room. Worked just fine for me.

Really though, the easiest thing to do is clean stuff up when it happens. Get the trash taken out when it gets full, put up laundry immediately, etc. Or have girls over often; that'll give you incentive.

I'm a bit of a slob, so the only things that keep my room looking decent are a) consideration for roommate, b) wanting to be able to have people over without being embarrassed of my underwear tossed everywhere, and c) wanting things to look good when my girlfriend visits. So, uh, suggest he have people over more often and start dating someone? Heh.

Is it possible he's just got too much stuff? Keeping the amount of clutter pared down makes things much, much easier (I usually limit myself to one milk-crate full of non-clothing/linens, non-textbook stuff), and it's much easier to do that with a dorm room because it's not like the stuff you don't bring has to get tossed forever... it can just stay at the parents' house.

My roommate would go ape**** on me if ANYTHING on my side of the room was slightly out of place. Not the best way to keep it clean, but I suppose it worked. I'm not a neat person by nature and as long as I can find everything, there are MUCH more important things to worry about than aesthetic appeal.

For me, it was having a "place" for everything...not just junk shoved places. If each item I owned had somewhere to go, it was easy to find things and easy to keep things neat. So, it comes down to proper storage for items.

College kids accumulate stuff, so have more storage if there is room for it.

I think it's a combination of both things mentioned here, he's got too much stuff and too little room aside from the fact that he's a slob. I'll look into the proper storgae thing next month, thanks for the suggestions guys, will still appreciate any more.
