I know CMU is a great university for CS. Do they offer any need based or merit base scholarships? Please post web links. Thanks
Yes. They are moderately generous, too.
Thanks
CS is a highly competitive major at CMU. Your student would need to be a very very TIPPY TOP student to garner any merit aid as a CS major. Most of CMU aid is need based aid.
What is your family income…because that will determine your potential aid.
My S17 just got need based AND merit from CMU – will be attending next year. He is not in CS, however. I get the sense that his interests were outside of the norm of CMU applicants, which is why resulted in the merit aid.
There’s no aid whatsoever for internationals but citizens can get some scholarships. They don’t meet need, are need aware, and CS acceptance rates are around 5% so it takes someone truly exceptional (demonstratedly so) to get in with merit.
They offer needs based aid. Very little merit money.
How good is the need based aid that they offer for US citizens?
I think they only offer merit based scholarship to rich people that they really want. Otherwise, they will give you sufficient need based scholarship. I could be wrong though.
@nynycasino1234 I think it depends how much they want you =P. I heard stories where people have the same EFC (or less!) had a lower aid.
@Thumper daughter is doing cs reserach in summer in a highly ranked differnt university, and maintain 4.0 GPA at an elite prep school, have some other national level awards and have interesting ec inside and oitside of school
Our family income is atound 95 K
@nynycasino1234 family income isn’t the whole picture. It is your EFC (expected family contribution).
I will calculate the numbers, as daughter wants to apply CMU next year
Currently getting a need based aid of $50k every year of high school, hoping we get similar award in college, thanks
CMU has a Financial Aid Estimator which is more detailed than a NPC: https://admission.enrollment.cmu.edu/pages/financial-aid-estimator which should give you a more accurate picture of the need-based aid they would give.
CMU seems to use preferred packaging to students they really want.
That is so helpful, thanks
I am in CS, and I got the Carnegie Scholarship (merit-based). There was no separate application, and I found out after I was accepted. Here is a link with details: https://www.cmu.edu/finaid/scholarships/university.html
I know a few students from CS as well as other majors who have received the same scholarship. The amount I got is $7k/year, and that is what I have heard from others as well (but I think the amount also varies a bit). Hope that helps!
