Any merit scholarships announced yet for UNC Chapel Hill

Hi all,
My daughter received her acceptance letter for UNC Chapel Hill, but no mention of a scholarship was made. We are wondering if scholarship offers are included in acceptance letters. If not, has anyone received notification of a merit scholarship yet?

Congratulations!!! To your daughter

You do realize that UNC gives few merit scholarships, right?

Absolutely. I know it’s competitive.

Do they have merit that doesn’t require an interview?

If so, does your daughter have any sort of hook? URM? Amazing resume?

They’ve released the bulk of them today. I know Carolina and Tar Heel Merit have come out.

@wstrav or anyone else on the forum:

Our DS received an email about being a recipient of Carolina scholarship. We are in state. We are extremely glad to have received that, but have found an odd feature…

Carolina scholarship is much more generous to OOS students than In state. Full-ride for OOS (approx 50K per year) vs $10K per year In state.

Does anyone know the reasoning behind this discrepancy considering UNC’s status as a flagship state school?

@rtpstudent , wow wow congratulations!!
I guess instate tuition is $9000 vs OOS is about $50k.
$10k instate covers tuition totally - may be that’s the reason ?
I thought Carolina scholarship is only for instate students though?

Think of it this way - Full tuition for In-state vs Full Tuition + fees + room & board for out-of-state students…Question is why this difference…

@rtpstudent UNC wants to attract talented OOS students who likely have a plethora of other college options with the Carolina Scholarship, considering these students likely wouldn’t choose UNC with the high OOS price tag over a more prestigious school.

specifically to make UNC financially attractive to the top students. They can look at your application and see how strong your packet it, and look at your finances to figure out how much money you might get elsewhere and maximize return. So they probably figure an in state person may not need as much to stay… https://giveto.unc.edu/impact/what-to-support/students/carolina-scholarships/

All valid points, but I still have lingering questions because stats and ECs of those selected for this scholarship are likely just as competitive, with as many quality options available whether In-state or OOS. I will continue looking for a definitive response and post it here if I find anything concrete.

I was awarded the Carolina Scholarship OOS.

For those who have received Carolina scholarship or other merit awards, how were you notified? We received our financial aid decision today, but it didn’t mention any merit award. Does a potential scholarship award get announced in a different place?

We received an email and it is also listed on the financial aid page.

I received the Carolina Scholarshop OOS! How many people receive it every year out of curiosity

Have they announced Carolina Covenant scholars?

@rtpstudent very very few if any of the top 30 schools offer any merit aid at all. none- of the ivies offer merit; only need based aid. The schools know exactly what they need to do to fill their classes how they want. The Carolina scholarship on it’s web page states the purpose is to try to keep the tippy top students who they know will have other offers. They are banking for example that some kids would go to UNC tuition free rather than paying 50K in tuition to go to duke or vanderbilt or Williams or Penn etc… That is the point of the carolina scholarship.

FYI a friends kid made the semifinal or final interviews for the morehead scholarship (did not get it) but she got into both Harvard and Stanford. UNC knows how talented the kids are that get special awards. You should be flattered if offered since it’s saying they recognize this since so few are offered.

Yes, my son is a Carolina Scholar and we’re ecstatic! I don’t know about the other scholarships, but he was notified a few days after his acceptance.

Superlate! But I got a merit scholarship instate covering tuition, board, fees and room! I was notified a few days after i got my admittance.
