Just so you are aware if your D gets and accepts a UD Spring 2016 semester offer and decides to matriculate (enter into a degree granting program) at another college in Fall 2015 that the acceptance to UD in the Spring will be negated. She would have to apply again as a transfer student.
There needs to be clarification on this – my D’s offer letter clearly states “you may accept our offer to enroll in the spring semester without pursuing any particular course of action this fall.” The Delaware in DC Reply Form also notes “you are guaranteed spring admission as long as we receive your deposit postmarked May 1.”
She has not expressed any interest or desire to start her college career in DC in a program that does not appeal to her; we have indicated her interest in being on the waitlist for the fall; however, if that does not happen, it is our intention to enroll her in the local community college to prepare her for UD in the spring (and hope that maybe some of these credits will transfer).
There is NO asterisk or warning provided in the offer paperwork that enrolling elsewhere in the fall will negate her guaranteed admission to the Spring 2016 semester; if UD wants us to give them a non-refundable deposit of $500 by May 1, they should let us know as soon as possible if space becomes available so our D can start in the fall; if not we would expect them to honor their “guaranteed spring admission”; our “course of action” in the fall should be irrelevant.
I’ve been reading over the posts about spring acceptance and wanted to get opinions on how to approach the choices. My daughter was also accepted for spring. she is very strong academically, National Honor Society, lots of extra curricular, but low scores. We were somewhat surprised since her sister also attends the school. It looks like this year was all about scores from our region. She is not interested in DC and really does not want to start in the Spring. Just curious on thoughts if we only select waitlist - does that not show enough interest? she’s actually shown a lot of interest over the last 3 months - letter of interest indicating this is the school she wants to attend, third teacher recommendation, etc…Also, how much interest starts to get “annoying” to Admissions. Any input is helpful.
My son received the DC in fall letter also. He’s been accepted to U of New Haven, Springfield, Alabama, JWU, Roger Williams and all of our State Schools (CT). UD has been his first choice from the start of this whole thing. Of all the schools, I know in my heart UD is the right fit for him. He accepted the spring of 16 option along with a place on the wait list for this fall. He will not be going to DC for the semester. My question to those who are in the same boat, should we go to the decision day this month? My wife and I have some questions that nobody seems to want to answer through email, phone or twitter. We want to attend on April 18th to get answers to a lot of the same questions asked here. However, when we go to sign up through the Blue Hen portal, it says he does not have access to this site. Has anybody else been denied access? Is it due to the fact that he isn’t definitely in for the fall yet?
NJBlueHenDad:
Please have a look at post #448 on this thread regarding this topic. I would verify this issue again with UD so you know specifically what UD will and will not allow in regards to the Spring 2016 admission offer if one chooses to accept it. If you find out info to the contrary please let us all know.
@NWCTdad My son was able to sign up for decision day NOT on the UDel portal but at the bottom of this link for the DC program: http://www.udel.edu/admissions/delawareindc/
I think @NJBlueHenDad raises very good points. I agree with @Mwallenmd that posts here indicate Spring admit is voided if attempting to transfer credits, BUT NOT ALL POSTS ARE ACCURATE. In fact, not all answers given by admissions over the phone are consistent (which means some are inaccurate as well). Remember, A. This is a brand new program and I don’t think they’ve got their ‘act’ together yet, and B. Some of the admissions ‘counselors’ are actually work-study students answering the phone.
Update on my son: Below is his new status on the NJ Portal. He was offered the DC Program and Spring Admission, but you’ll note neither is included on the portal (only via his postal letter). He hasn’t decided about DC (nor Spring) and had immediately emailed interest to be accepted on the wait list for Fall. (No reply to that email).
So he did click the middle choice below (wait list for Fall only) since he has already been offered admission for Spring.
Odd that he was offered DC/Spring and his portal update doesn’t indicate same.
Also, enlightening for those wait listed without being offered Spring: “available by invitation only for SELECT MAJORS.” (My son is Undeclared, OOS, definite bubble stats, great ECs and accepted to Penn State University Park, but UDel has been his top choice. My feeling is if not accepted into the Fall he’ll likely opt for Penn State).
So here’s my son’s portal update as of this morning:
My Application
You plan to start: 2015 Fall Semester
Application: Thanks for applying!
Status: Wait list
Decision: We are not able to offer you a space in the class of 2019 and have placed you on the waiting list. If you wish to remain in consideration for admission, please refer to your official letter and indicate your choice below. (Please note that the Spring 2016 is available by invitation only for select majors.)
Wait List Action:
Yes, I wish to be considered for Fall 2015 or Spring 2016 entry @ UD.
Yes, I wish to be considered for Fall 2015 (only) @ UD.
No, I wish to decline the wait list options.
NWCTdad:
If you go directly to the website for the UD in DC Program (http://www.udel.edu/admissions/delawareindc/) there is a place to register for the April 18 Decision Day at the bottom. Good luck.
Just an fyi - my daughter was told by her admissions rep that the wait list is not first come/first serve.
Mwallenmd: from your experience, have you ever heard of them going to the waitlist prior to May 15th?
DVL123:
If your D’s only interest is the wait list for the Fall I would recommend accepting this offer ASAP. The wait list is not ranked so it is a “first-come, first served” by major situation. The longer she waits the lower she will be down on the list.
My perspective is that UD was really burned last year by so many OOS students accepting initial admission offers, which resulted in UD ending up with 400 more students than they really wanted. I suspect this year that they will initially offer acceptances to fewer OOS students initially, will wait to see the response, and will then begin to accept students in off the wait list. While it is impossible to accurately predict the initial offer response this year, I would not be surprised to see a decent number of students being subsequently taken in off the wait list. At least I hope this will be the case.
My D emailed our admissions rep and specifically asked if it is first come first serve within the major and she wrote back that it is not. So, it sounds like they are giving out different information depending on who you speak with?
I agree. It looks like this year different people have gotten different responses from admissions regarding the wait list question (and other things as well). I do know for sure that it was not ranked in previous years (and UD has not changed this in their Common Data Set as of last year). Last year, the first year of the new admission’s process, I don’t believe any students were taken in off the wait list due to the much larger number than anticipated number of OOS students who accepted the initial admission offers. In years previous to this most students heard about wait list decisions right after May 1. But as things seem so bizarre who knows what they will do this year. If your D only has an interest in the wait list option for the Fall then IMHO it still might be prudent to accept this ASAP.
With the new options they are offering this year I would wonder how all these things might come into play regarding ranking the wait list. I would not even want to venture a guess here. Perhaps they have formulated a computer program to do this. Who knows for sure. I guess we will just have to wait and see.
I’m still listed as “application under review” but my FAFSA application part has switched to “under review” or something like that so I’m sure at this point they accepted me but they aren’t allowed to say it because university policies or something like that. I have sent my old transcripts that they destroyed though and I think I’m all set to go. But you never know until the official word I suppose.
I understand what they are saying about the “first come first served” I don’t think they can honestly say this is the case due to particular programs… So for example if 10 kids refuse Chem E spots and the first two kids on the waitlist are nursing majors they will not take those kids… they will go down the list and take the Chem E kids. perhaps they are going by overall stats as well but I think it will go more towards available spots in each major.
@DVL123 I would have your daughter indicate the wait-list position that she would accept if offered a spot (fall admit). I would also have her write a letter stating that UDEL is her #1 choice, and she would DEFINITELY attend if admitted. In addition, have her guidance counselor call on her behalf. I wouldn’t worry about “too much interest” - as long as you don’t start stalking them - because at this point she has nothing to lose. I would continually follow up every 10-14 days, and definitely let them know all new accomplishments and grades…
2Kawaii4Senpai, hang in there…we were really so surprised when our daughter got in…there’s always a chance until you get the denial…I wish you the best. Do you have other schools that you are considering?
No not really. This is really the only school I ever wanted to go to ever since I decided to go back. If nothing works out, I think it’s just in my best interest to continue to go to my current college and finish out with a degree that gets me out the fastest.
The admissions office told me Friday that the wait list this year is not first come first served. They look at a variety of factors such as application strength vs which majors have openings, etc etc This is not consistent with what was posted above so I don’t know which is correct.
Got the official wait list letter in today’s mail. Says 26,000 applications for 3,800 spots; about 4,000students are offered a place on the wait list and typically about 400 are offered admission for the fall but difficult to predict how many offers will be made this year.
@wa7945 what is your intended major and good luck to you
