There seems to be a large number of musicians applying to the large universities (Yale, Harvard, etc.), but I was just wondering if the same goes for LACs. I understand there are less performance opportunities at small colleges like Amherst, but does anyone know anything about their music department? Oh, and did anyone send a cd in?

I play clarinet. Was 1st alternate to Texas All-State Band, auditioning again for state next week. I sent in a cd of the Poulenc Sonata and Rose Etude 19. I also sing choir, play piano (mostly jazz), and keyboard percussion.

So yeah, if you play an instrument, reply! Musicians unite!

I'm a tuba player and I've already gotten in (early decision). last year, i was principal for the district honor band. I was going to go for state, and many instructors and even the principal chair tubist of one of the state bands told me that i would definately make it, but with college apps and everything I decided not to bother. I like playing tuba but it's certainly not going to be my career- I'm more of a hardcore academics person who happens to play tuba on the side. I did not send in a CD, partly because I wanted my academic success to speak for itself, and because I didn't want to be accepted as "the kid who will play tuba for us". I might try out for the orchestra or play in the pep band, i'm not sure... I also sing, I might be in the mens glee club or something. As a hobby, I compose music, and i'm probably more into that than i am into tuba or singing.

I do mostly low-brow stuff, like hiphop beats for my own efforts at rapping, and downtempo stuff, and stabs at electro music. I'm not really into mainstream rap or thumping techno, tho. I want to take composition classes at amherst to get better.

Is amherst your 1st choice? it was definately my 1st. I wanted the small LAC environment over bigger institutions like HYPS.

i'm not quite sure. i've never visited a liberal arts college before, so i really don't know what the environment is like. my teachers tell me that my personality would fit in a lot better at a LAC though, and my only concerns for amherst are the musical opportunities and ethnic diversity. my top choice is yale (i got deferred from harvard EA, but i only applied there early because of their new financial initiative, in which i would have to pay NOTHING to go.) but if i don't get into yale, then amherst is near the top of my list.

i'm a musician. although i applied to yale EA (and was deferred), i would definitely be happy at amherst. the community is so vibrant and the campus is just plain awesome.

anywho, i play violin and piano. have been in 1st violins of both the all-county orchestra and kentucky all-state this year and last year. (before that i lived in new orleans). i'm concertmaster at my school orchestra which has played at the midwest clinic in chicago, at the natl youth orchestra festival, and on npr's "from the top." we'll play at carnegie hall next year. i send in a tape of me playing medelssohn's violin concerto accompanied with orchestra.

i'm really nervous though - everyone who submits a CD generally seems to be phenomenal. i'm good, but i'm no prodigy or anything =( as long as it doesn't hurt my app though, its all good. g'luck to all my fellow musicians.

I'm applying to Amherst too. I'm a singer and I was going to send in a CD but I did my recording when I was sick following All-State... so it didn't sound too hot.

Anyway.... I've done chorus since 3rd grade and I was in the New York All-State Chorus this year, and I'll be going to All-Eastern in Baltimore this March. I've done 7 All-County's and 2 Area All-States.

How much do you guys think music will play into the admissions process?

I'm a musician too, a singer like Arman718. Lots of regional and state recognition. I didn't send in a CD because at the last minute I realized I needed a teacher recommendation. :P

Well, I've got a slightly different musical background than you guys.... I love the piano, but i'm not that musically inclined (not a very good ear) but I started playing it on my own towards the end of freshman year and I've basically taught myself how to play. Never had any formal lessons, just sort of been reading notes and learning it on spare time, but i LOVE IT!! So... i didn't send in a CD because most people have been playing for quite some time and i'd sound awful compared to them...
