So I have the same thread in the College Search forum going, but I think this forum is more appropriate for the question *

I'm looking for a liberal arts college in the New England area that's relatively friendly for transfer students, so far I've only looked at Connecticut College and Trinity, so any other recommendations would be GREATLY appreciated.

You should seriously consider expanding to the Philadelphia area and New York (the whole state, not just the city). There are a number of great liberal arts colleges in each of those places like Vassar, Hamilton, Colgate, Haverford, and Swarthmore. Both places are also fairly similar climatically, geographically, and socially to New England if that’s what you care about. If you are really, really into New England it’s going to be hard, since a lot of liberal arts colleges are fairly unfriendly to transfers. Connecticut and Trinity would probably be the friendliest of the decent ones. I say decent because Bennington, Hampshire, Colby Sawyer, and others would be easier, but they really are wastes of money. Wesleyan and Colby would probably be a little easier to get into than some of the others, particularly Williams and Amherst, but still pretty difficult. Because of the difficulty, you should apply to a lot of liberal arts colleges, and consider the New York and Philadelphia area ones as well if you really want to maximize your chances of transferring to a good liberal arts college.

One technique I use is to go to the College Search section of the CB website. Put in one of the colleges you’re interested in and it will list other colleges that were also searched by people interested in that college. For each college you fine, look at the Admissions information and it will give you transfer numbers which will tell you what percentage of applicants they admit.

I am definitely open to the Philadelphia and New York area schools as well, since one of my top choices is in/near Philadelphia…so I’m by no means only looking at New England area ones

Forgot to add:

I have actually been looking at Haverford; how difficult and/or what kind of stats are needed to get into that particular school?

Haverford is pretty tough for transfers, easily <10% acceptance rate each year. Even if you have good stats, it’s still a crap shoot. I suggest you look up the Common Data Sets for any LACs you’re interested in, and check out the transfer enrollment section. Collegeboard stats are often outdated, and most schools release a CDS every school year.

Off of the top of my head: Wesleyan is relatively friendly to transfers, maybe a 20% acceptance rate. If you’re female, Smith and Mt. Holyoke have transfer acceptance rates similar to their freshman acceptance rates (40-50%). Swarthmore had a decent rate…but then I guess word got out that they were aiming to have a decently-sized transfer class each year and I’m not sure what the rate was this year, but it probably went down. Beyond these, top LACs in New England are very tough to get into as a transfer. I never looked at Skidmore, but it might be a less competitive but nice option.

@ birdhouse,
Thank you for the suggestions. I thought Haverford was really tough, guess that goes that.
I did look at Wesleyan, however, I read/heard somewhere that they are need-aware for transfers, and although I wouldn’t necessarily need FA, I would still rather apply to need-blind schools, not sure if that’s true about Wesleyan though

EDIT I also looked at Skidmore, seems very nice also but wasn’t sure what the opinions on the school are
