Any new insight on how Elon Admissions calculates an applicant's GPA?

Okay, so the Elon Admission website says the middle 50 percent of Elon's incoming first-year class had a 3.5 - 4.0+ high school GPA.

And a thread from a few years ago says Elon adds 1 for honors and 2 for AP classes.

And my understanding is that Elon only considers classes in Math, Science, Social Sciences, English, and Foreign Language.

Can anyone confirm that my understandings are correct and that the mid 50% 3.5-4.0 GPA figures on the website are calculated in this manner?

What about for applicants who attend high schools that do not offer AP classes? It seems their GPAs will be comparatively lower unless some adjustment is made to put them in line with the GPAs of students who have taken AP classes at their high schools?

And forgot to ask:

Are the pluses and minuses counted as .3 and .7?

Do they count middle school grades that appear on the HS transcript?

Elon uses the State of North Carolina standard for GPA calculation. North Carolina uses a +2.0 of weighting for AP and +1.0 of weighting for honors. No pluses or minuses. Only applies to Math, Science, Social Sciences, English, and Foreign Language classes taken from 9th to 12th grade.

Thanks, hotforteacher.

When you say no pluses or minuses, does that mean that in computing GPA a B+ counts as a 3.0 (not a 3.3) and an A- counts a 4.0 (not a 3.7)?

What about any adjustment for kids in a HS that doesn’t have AP classes?

Standard Weight Honors Weighted AP. Weighted
100-96% = 4.00 5.00 6.00
95% = 3.88 4.88 5.88
94% = 3.75 4.75 5.75
93% = 3.63 4.63 5.63
92% = 3.50 4.50 5.50
91% = 3.38 4.38 5.38
90% = 3.25 4.25 5.25

Hotforteacher, when you say “only applies to Math, Science…” do you mean they don’t recalc/weight grades in other classes, even if they are honors and/or AP, or that they don’t use any other grades in their calculations? Also any idea if the fellows programs GPA requirements are based on recalced grades or unweighted grades. My son has a 3.6 unweighted GPA, but a 4.2 with a +1 weighting for both honors and AP. Not sure if he would be eligible for any of the Fellows programs or not…

We had a frustrating experience with this topic. Our private HS has many requirements (I think old fashion and not necessary) to graduate, which Elon Admission office told us they do not factor into GPA. If you think Elon is the school for you, select courses wisely.

Elon accounts for the various factors that effect a students GPA calculation when making their admission decisions. They realize there is no uniform standard across all schools, at least thats what they told me on various occasions.
This does not seem to apply to their fellows programs though as that first round seems to be match numbers or you’re denied.
