Accomodations in NYC can be very pricey. My advice would be to ask the admissions office if they can set you up with a student host. This will save you a ton of money, and give you a better look at the school.

My friend found this little guest house on West 9th Street in the Village. Her whole family stayed there on a recent trip, and they all liked it very much. It's a brownstone, no elevator. Its location is perfect for NYU, and the rates are very reasonable. The innkeeper's name is Ron Keenan, and it's called A Village House, 45 West 9th Street, New York, NY 10011. The telephone number is 212-529-2396, e-mail is villagehouse@prodigy.net.

NYC is very expensive to stay in, but if I were you, I would try to stay in Manhattan for the two days, either with a student or in a hostel or guest house. Commuting from New Jersey is cheaper, yes, but it's a different sort of experience. Just my opinion.
