Any New York City parents can give advice?

I'm form Canada. I got in Stern of New York U and want to make a visit there before the official school preview date.

I want to spend two days and one night in NYC and keep the budget for this trip as low as possible.

Any suggestions for accommodations, travel and food? Thanks.

Accomodations in NYC can be very pricey. My advice would be to ask the admissions office if they can set you up with a student host. This will save you a ton of money, and give you a better look at the school.

PS. Congratulations!

crazy for ivy you should also look at motels/hotels in jersey city, which allows one to take one $1.50 train to get to nyu

There is a hostel or two in the East Village...within walking distance of the school. http://reservations.bookhostels.com/bootsnall.com/hostel.php

Also, check out craigslistmanhattan. There are sometimes rooms offered on that site.

You should try to stay in the neighborhood.

The Best Western Ambassador on 46th often has really good rates, esp. with a AAA card.

The Salisbury, on the corner of 56th (I think) and 6th is also inexpensive.

My friend found this little guest house on West 9th Street in the Village. Her whole family stayed there on a recent trip, and they all liked it very much. It's a brownstone, no elevator. Its location is perfect for NYU, and the rates are very reasonable. The innkeeper's name is Ron Keenan, and it's called A Village House, 45 West 9th Street, New York, NY 10011. The telephone number is 212-529-2396, e-mail is villagehouse@prodigy.net.

NYC is very expensive to stay in, but if I were you, I would try to stay in Manhattan for the two days, either with a student or in a hostel or guest house. Commuting from New Jersey is cheaper, yes, but it's a different sort of experience. Just my opinion.

thanks...any more suggestions?

Ask your parents and any adult you know if they know any nice family who has an extra bunk.

Manhattanites are accustomed to guests.

NYU has a youth hostel in uptown manhattan which is very cheap.
Call them and ask

y17k, thanks.

I called NYU yesterday, they gave me list of accomodations. I called some of them & got following info:

NYU Hotel Accomodation (contracted to NYU only where there is a floor exhibit info about NYU) $160 per night exclude tax

Some club quarters in midtown where the price is also around $160

the accomodations they suggested are within walking distance to NYU...but they are too expensive......wow

y17k, do you have any info like location, phone & price about the youth hostel in upper manhattan?
