i'm an out-of-stater who will be attending UCSB this fall, and my biggest worry is that almost everyone will be a heavy party-goer/drunkard/etc. i, for one (being sixteen), haven't ever tried alcohol/etc and don't plan to - basically, i'm hoping there are some smart people out here who want to stay in the dorms to drink coffee and read books and study (to try and transfer into ucb coughcough xD)

pleased to meet all of you! (and are there any out there, who like me, got ridiculously low GPAs (2point some in my case) but high SATs (in my case, 2200+)? hahahah random i know

Well Santa Barbara is a normal school lol...there are people that party and people that do like to go to the library and study. Sometime there are people that do both! There is a party scene, but if you want to stay away from it then you can and I am sure you will find other people who think like you once you are there.
Why the love for UCB? I was admitted and turned it down for Santa Barbara..have you ever been to ucb? It's not what it's cracked up to be...but that's just my opinion so no one start jumping down my throat infuriated with me :-)

hey, gaucho8 is right, you choose whether to party or not and there are definitely some people don't want to party much and I am one of them. And, it's not party everyday, you only can find party on the weekends and vacation. About the SAT and GPA thing, I have opposite situation, my GPA is pretty good, but my SAT is only 1630...and I will be doing chemE in fall, so I can't party and don't want to party much because it is a hard major

Gaucho8: I didn't consider UCB at all because I knew my GPA was far too low. However, is your reason for not going to UCB related to academics, or location, or... ? I'd be interested to know :) Because I'm an international student, I've never visited the campuses so I have limited knowledge.

How long have you been at UCSB? Or are you a soon-to-be-freshman?

f77126: I don't really think SATs measure much at all =P It is the GPA that counts. Yeah, I heard that UCSB is very competitive for engineering and maths, and the reason I applied to UCSB instead of Irvine or Davis is because it supposedly has a better math department.

(Sorry for all the ranting =P)

Anyway, if you guys already are at UCSB, could you tell me a bit about the grading? Is it difficult/easy to get good grades? Do people frequently get As, or is it a place where 4.0s are hard to come by?

uhh, I am going there on fall, so I am still in high school just like you, well 4.0 in college is super hard, it's not like high school. Since there is no Ap class, and college class are high level, a 3.0 is consider pretty good already...well i am not really sure about if the grading in UCSB is hard, but UC is pretty prestigeous and it can't be very easy. I care the ranking a lot as well just like you, but UCSB is the best school I got in other than UC Merced...lol

Um, no. Those ARE the major party times, but you can find a party any night of the week, my friend. You'll see.

To the original poster, my sister attended UCSB for 4 years and never drank/did drugs once. She found herself a nice little niche of friends that shared the same interests as her. I suggest dorming on the honors floor if you can. That's where she met a lot of those friends/people. Although admittedly, some of those kids party as much as the rest of the group.

If you plan on transferring to Berkeley, go to a California community college first. You'll save money, you'll have an easier time, and have a greater chance of being admitted. Also, try and tour both if you can. I have a feeling that once you step on to the UCSB campus, it'll be hard to get you to leave.

actually, when i visited ucsb it made me want to go less. everyone had said that ucsb was really pretty and i had really high expectations of it, so i was somewhat disappointed when i went. i hope it was just the weather that day, though, since it was sort of cloudy.

I /was/ thinking of going to a CCC first, but my dad is pretty much choosing UCSB for me because he knows people there. I'm glad there's a sizeable population of non-partyers too, though -- you put me at my ease :)

true enough, though... i only hear of CCC's and UCSD people transferring at all. it's okay, it's not my major goal to transfer if i enjoy UCSB and do well.

Come on discordial, let's not be unrealistic here. It gets overcast no matter where you go. At least it doesn't rain in Santa Barbara like the 20+ days Berkeley had in March.
