Hey - :)

I'm trying to decide on a school that will gve me a good amount of academic freedom. Do I have any chance at any of these? Are there any other colleges with close to open curriculums I should consider?

Also, I intend to go for an interview all of these places, if that helps at all.

BTW, I have a few AP grades...

AP US History - 5
AP US Gov & Politics - 5
AP European History - 4
AP English Language -4
AP English Literature - 5

Colorado College

Lewis & Clark College (not quite open curriculum, but it's a very small core)

New College of Florida

New York University (Gallatin school... probably no chance)

Pitzer College (again, there's a distribution requirement, but it's small)

University of California-Santa Cruz (I don't think I even qualify for the UC system, do I? :P)

University of Rochester (HAHA, yeah right...)

Whitman College (I'm hoping that being from the East Coast will help me a bit here... that and the ineterview..)

Should I just go somewhere else and try to transfer? Or do any of you think I'd havea chance any of these places?

university of rochester - based on your ACT score, you should have a fairly good chance.

I think you're in at Lewis and Clark.

Personally, I think you are undershooting a litle bit, but I have no idea what an 88 is? What is the GPA equivolent?

usually an 88 average would be about a 3.33 (at my school)

and to the OP, i agree you might be undershooting, and you should have a couple of extra reaches like maybe even Amherst.

Also, if you are a girl, i believe Smith College has an open curriculum.
Other colleges with the option of Open Curric are Hamilton College, Grinnell College, and maybe Pomona College.

I think your a lock at most, why not apply to some wild cards such as
bard, bucknell, bryn mawr, washington and jefferson colege, trinity,

When I was reading your post, and before I even got to your list of schools, I was thinking "Colorado College". It is awesome. Go visit.

Evergreen State College has an open curriculum

I couldn't tell you anything about the rest, but something tells me that you are just the type of student Colorado College looks for. I've visited and I loved the campus, but it's just too small of a school for me to be comfortable. If you want some academic freedom and don't mind a small student population, that's the school for you and I think you would be accepted. Go visit. Then apply. The worst they can tell you is no, and if you don't apply you might as well have been told no.

Cool thing about Colorado College: you're only in class for 2-3 hours a day, and sometimes classes can take place completely off campus (for instance, my tour guide when I visited told me about an Italian class in Italy).

I had a 28 act and got into NYU Cas, and Cornell..........you have a chance my man!

Does your 88 put you in the top 15% (like at my school), or is it like a 3.3 that puts you in the top 50% (like many schools)?

It's clearly a big difference; I had an 89% and got into some very good schools.

Colorado College and Grinnell.

Looking at your AP scores (mostly 5s and a couple of 4s), I'd say you go to a no-nonsense school. Try to raise your ACT/SAT if you can. I agree that you do not have any reaches in your group. They are all matches and you even have a safety.

nodnard: Yeah, I'm only top 50%. HORRIBLE class rank.

Alexandre: Alright, what schools would you recommend? I'm planning on buying an SAT review book soon... it's the math that always kills me. I can manage around 99th percentile for writing and reading, though.

nathan: Yeah, Colorado College sounds PERFECT. No core curriculum, study one subject at a time, small as hell school... I'm hoping that the fact that I'm taking a gap year doesn't hurt me too much. I've gotta find out what to do to make my resume look best during a gap year... heh.

More thoughts on my chances/suggestions on other schools to apply to would be welcome. :)

Whitman is a great school and it seems like you would be admitted. They REALLY want east coast students. I got a call a month after the deadline asking if I still wanted to apply. Maybe they just wanted more applications, but I have a feeling they wanted (and still do!) more state diversity.

Hmm... thanks for the advice. The problem is, I'm from New York, which I bet is the best-represented East Coast state. Still, I'll try for Whitman, even though I know it's a reach. Looks like a /great/ school.

But Alexandre and the others who think I'm underreaching - what schools would you recommend I apply to, assuming I can get my SAT/ACT grades up?

Anyone got any more suggestions? Eh? Eh?

Vassar might be worth a peek.

Yeah, Vassar looks interesting. Thign is, I REALLY doubt that I'd get in there.

Keep the suggestions coming, please? :) You guys think I have a shot at Colorado College? That college looks especially awesome.
