Just curious.

My interviewer said something about there being in the neighborhood of 2900 ED applicants this year. Whether this number is for CC or both CC and SEAS, I don't know.

Seriously!? For class of 2012 it was 2500 applicants (CC and SEAS combined). I really hope your interviewer's wrong.

yeah, that's 16% increase.... that sounds like too much of an increase in one year.
I really hope that is not true.....
:(

welllll nothing we can do now :-/

but it can help us after decisions actually come out

think of it this way: if you get in, you beat a ridiculous number of people. if you don't get in, there were just so many more people that applied that it was that much harder to get in and there were a lot more kids with the credentials who got denied.

Yikes, I heard about that too.
Good luck everyone!

If it's 2900 applicants just for CC, that'd be crazy.. gah. Assuming they admit around 450 freshmen for CC (about the same as last year), that would be a 15.5% acceptance rate for ED for CC. I don't think that 2900 is referring to CC, though. That just seems unusually high, a 37.8% increase in applicants from last year..? Highly doubtful.

More likely, 2900 refers to CC + SEAS applicants. That would still represent a 14.9% increase in applicants. Assuming they admit around 600 freshmen for CC + SEAS (again, about the same as last year), that would work out to a 20.7% combined acceptance rate for ED.

Doing a bit of math, 2900 CC + SEAS applicants would work out to approximately 2419 CC applicants and 481 SEAS applicants for the ED round based on last year's ratio. So CC's acceptance rate for ED (assuming an freshman class of 450) would be 18.6%, and SEAS's acceptance rate for ED (assuming a freshman class of 150) would be 31.2%. Again, that would work out to a total combined acceptance rate of 20.7%. Note: this is all guesswork.

Anyway, for comparison's sake, class of 2012's CC ED acceptance rate was 21.6% and SEAS ED acceptance rate was 33.9% for a combined acceptance rate of 23.6%.

hmm... im just wondering, is it possible that they would choose more applicants from their ED pool because of the economic crisis and they want to have more ppl with definite comitment?(i would assume that the ED applicants are more committed financially as well...if that makes any sense) but then again, Columbia admission is so competitive that there are probably more than enough ppl willing to pay the absurd amount of money for a Columbian education (including myself) that they don't have to worry about it...i guess im just ranting cuz im super nervous

unfortunately, 15 or 16% isn't that unrealistic a number. the number of wesleyan apps went up 40% and many other schools are seeing increases like Columbia's. scary, but true. oh well, at least i won't feel as bad if i get rejected....

You know what, I thought 40% was an impossibly huge jump, but when considering a few factors, I'm beginning to think that it could be possible.

This is the first year of admissions with the new financial aid enhancements, which could substantially affect a student's willingness to commit to an expensive institution. Don't forget the Obama effect as well - small, yes, but possibly enough to add a few extra applicants.

Shoot, I'll be damned if it's really a 40% increase in applicants. I'm hoping that 2900 applicants refers to CC + SEAS and it's only a 14.9% increase, but either way it's going to be very competitive. Whether CC's ED acceptance rate ends up 18% or 15% this year, I can only imagine how tough it's going to be for RD applicants. Wowee..

I instantly don't feel as bad about (potentially) getting rejected, and what a treat it'd be to be accepted.

I'm RD applicant hah there goes any and all of my hope!

omg, i just don't want to believe this.....
but how do you guys know though? I mean this is probably true,
but Columbia didn't even announce if there has been an increase or decrease in ED applicant number.
This is so sad
I thought the falling economy meant less competition...........
how does this come to be? I just don't get it...

Columbia College's acceptance rate for RD last year was 7.08%. So maybe 6% or even high 5% this year? Gah, it can't be...

maybe the number of people went up, but i don't think i would bet entirely on the quality of each application going up (not to say mine is perfect either). I have theories about Harvard and Princeton etc that people will apply "for the heck of it" because they have "nothing to lose"

but yes, it does become more difficult as more and more people come in because there are bound to be some superstars in there. oof..depressing!

Come on, someone just threw out an unverified number, and then all of a sudden there's an uproar haha.

My father is a Columbia Alum and an interviewer for Columbia.

He received an email from Columbia saying 2900 ed applicants, a huge increase.

The number's legit. I'm really freaked out.

So 2900 is CC + SEAS? Or just CC?

Ahhhh! Do you think they will accept more people if there are extremely compelling applicants?

I don't know... I mean... there's only enough physical room for so many...

So does that mean the chance of getting admitted is reduced?

Please tell me no.
