Any one submitting an Art portfolio/supplement?

I'm just wonder if any others are submitting an Art supplement. If so, how many pieces are u submitting, and what type (photography, painting-realism, painting-abstract, painting-impressionism/other, drawing, and what not, you get the point)? I have two completely different styles (painting-impressionism mixed with collage, and photo-realism charcoals), so my submission is going to include both styles equally. And also, does stanford require slides? Because some schools are just as happy with CDs.

CDs are fine.

should you submit a cover letter or anything of the sort to the department...??

The Stanford admissions webpage explains the arts supplement thoroughly, you should take a look at it.

arggh. yeah, I've looked at it... it just seems like that it's too sparse to not submit anything else to the department, especially since visual arts can sort of be subjective, you know?
hm. how to submit a portfolio-- should it be ten of your BEST works, or five works that have a "common theme" and then another five of your best woroks? I keep hearing about how a common theme is important in a portfolio... and such.

well, have you created works with a theme? Media as a common theme should be well developed and show depth and growth. Generally, subject matter as a theme isn't very strong, unless you have a personal reason for choosing it. If your works have common conceptual themes, however, I'd definitely include those. If not, I'd just go with the ten best (with some variety to show breadth).

Why can't it be 10 of your best works that promote a common theme? Be creative, Mister/Miss Artist. I'm sure you'll have created a lot more stuff by the deadline that will be able to strengthen and contribute to your overall body of work. :)

thanks for your help, guys! Okay, still-- question about the portfolio's artist statment and whatnot-- should that be included? the reason why is because I actually have a portfolio from my art class (it was pretty good-- won some awards) ... except that included an artists statment/cover letter ish thing.... I just want to know if i should get rid of that before sending the same thing in.

Only Ten!?!?!?! Tt_______tt

um... for some, yes.
design: do not exceed ten images
painting, drawing, printmaking and sculpture: do not exceed 10 images.
photography: do not exceed fifteen images...
video, digital media, and electronic arts: do not exceed more than 3 segments totaling no more than 10 mins...

you will also need a recommendation:
"You MUST include a letter of recommendation from your private teacher in your discipline (or mentor if not studying privately at this time) with your Fine and Performing Arts submission, one per arts submission. Please have your teacher seal the letter in an envelope and sign his/her name across the envelope flap. No materials will be reviewed if this required recommendation is not included in the same envelope with your arts form and materials/request to audition live. This additional letter will NOT be counted as one of the required TWO letters of recommendation for your application for admission. It will be reviewed by our arts faculty, not by theadmission office."

GAAH! what if I really don't... have a teacher at all?!?!?!!? (I never took the art class; I just did stuff on my own)... Could I just go to an art teacher in my department?

<a href="http://www.stanford.edu/dept/uga/pdf/07-08%20Fine%20Arts_Supplement%20FINAL.pdf%5B/url%5D">http://www.stanford.edu/dept/uga/pdf/07-08%20Fine%20Arts_Supplement%20FINAL.pdf</a></p>

... also..... you supposedly have to finish the common app BEFORE you even submit the supplementary materials......... wow.

It says that "Applicants are limited to TWO submissions. You must enclose a separate arts form for EACH submission. You may photocopy the form
as needed." does that mean we can submit two separate art portfolios? I'm asking because i have two completely different styles. Each has its own theme and different medium.

btw, explode, i think you can just ask the art teacher at your school for a recommendation after showing him/her ur stuff. But it won't be as good since he/she doesn't really know you that well, and he/she won't be able to describe your process, growth, etc.

gah. What if I have a teacher from Middle School who would probably be able to ... really... "witness" my growth? hehe.
I think that you can submit two.

***?!?!!?materials must be submitted by 11/15 ?!?!?!?!

yeah.... and 10/15 if you're applying SCEA.
