<p>I got into UCLA, UCSD, UCI, USC and the university of maryland. (not like i concentrated all across the country or anything haha)
UMD was free, while every single one of the other schools ranged from 47k to 52k.</p>

<p>En1gma, did you understand what he was trying to say? He’s trying to tell you that you’re better of at places like Baylor or Drexel than at Berkeley because they’re privates and Berkeley is public.</p>

<p>but seriously… why is there so much berkeley hate around here? i’ve been a long time CC reader … and sakky’s posts are really concrete and logical … and i hardly get anyone rebutting effectively.</p>
<p>sakkys’s posts are insightful. The problem is, he dwells too much on the negative aspect of Berkeley. If you want to get loads of negative feedback about Berkeley, he’s the best resource person to consult for that. If you want to get the positive and neutral feedback, you have the option to not read his posts. Nonetheless, his presence is valuable on this forum as his posts are leveraging the over-glorified Berkeley name. </p>
<p>My other angst on that issue is that he does not have a counterpart from other elite schools, which makes the whole thing sine-sided, against Berkeley’s. </p>
<p>I would really want to read the negative sides of Harvard, Yale and Princeton. I know they’ve got loads too.</p>

<p>and true… ithaca’s weather was a big no-no for me. And i didn’t/don’t care much about the ‘ivy’ tag. This will be the first time i set foot on US soil and i felt Berkeley would give me a more “true” experience of American culture with all it’s diversity and size compared to a private school.</p>
<p>But now after reading the posts here i get the impression that Berkeley isn’t valued much in USA and that i might lose my edge in graduate school and employment prospect in competition against a fellow ivy graduate. So i guess my question is how big is the difference in prestige for cal when compared to an ivy like brown, dartmouth or columbia? Is it quite significant or marginal? and how well do you think i have to do in academics to compensate for that shortcoming?</p>

<p>That’s not true. In fact, there are more Berkeley grads going to grad school than any school in the US. Of course, the smaller schools would argue because they would come out better when measured on averages.</p>

<p>I’m a junior transfer from a CCC. Originally I’m from Germany and I’m paying ~$50k a year, so $100k total. I got into all the UCs but didn’t apply to any privates. Since my major is EECS there are no privates I would have chosen over Berkeley except for MIT and Stanford… but I wouldn’t have had a chance to get in there I guess

Unfortunately my university doesn’t have a cooperation with Cal so I thought about the option of applying at Berkeley as a free mover. Do you know if it’s possible to apply as a visiting student for just one year? </p>
