I got a single in high rise. Is that good in your opinion? If you know anything about high rise I would love to hear it. What do you like about it, what do you hate about it...etc

hey I got a single there also. Not sure what its like though

HAHAHAHA! I just came here to ask the exact same question. Guess JP 1000 beat me to it :D

So, is it an awesome Hall? Pros, cons? Thanks!

I lived in a double in High Rise 5 during my freshman year. While it is not as social as dorms like Donlon because of its suite-style setup, it is what you make of it. The doubles and singles are fairly large, and every floor has an awesome kitchen and common area with a great balcony. Plus, on the top floor, there is an amazing sky lounge with a flat screen TV and views of the entire campus.

Keep in mind that if you’re a people person, you won’t be spending much time in your dorm anyway. Between your classes, extracurriculars, and other activities, you will be meeting people from all over campus, and you probably won’t be paying much attention to your dorm after a while.

Another single in High Rise 5 here. Would anyone have some pictures of the rooms? The High Rises are the only dorms I haven’t really seen.

I’m a single too. Haven’t found any pictures either.

i’m in a triple on the 5th floor.

is there like a group on facebook we can join for our dorm?

The classof2014.cornell.edu site lets you view everyone in the hall.

Oh, and I also found this [lovely story](https://cornellsun.com/node/26023) about problems with water and bed bugs (!) in the High Rises. I like the suite-style single though, so it seems like it’s a mixed bag for me.

i stayed in HR 5 when i visited and LOVED it. i am also in a 5th floor single. i thought it was nice and cozy there.

IMO, suite-style arrangements are optimal for small groups of upperclassmen who want to live together as a unit. They are sub-optimal for people new to the university who want to form new relationships, because the suites are somewhat isolating, when compared to a conventional dorm where people hang out and BS in the long halls.

Back in the day, when I returned from a leave I had to get housing in one of the high-rises, sharing a suite with a hodge-podge of transfer students and others who I had nothing in common with. It was the worst living experience of my time at Cornell. Though there was nothing wrong with the suite or the building physically, if the suitemates had turned out to be friends of mine perhaps it would have been the best experience. But in the “regular” dorm, if you didn’t care for your roommate you just walked on down the hall, this seemed less prevalent or easy somehow in the high rise. Perhaps it was merely because at the time they were dorms for upperclassmen, not sure.

@stressedIBgirl: That picture that malan89 found of the single isn’t too flattering. Did you find the single to be spacious and comfortable enough?

that picture poster by malan89 of the single looks terrible. I thought the singles were spacious. Can anyone confirm that pic is what the single is going to look like

The picture doesn’t seem too flattering, but it also doesn’t show very much and could be from a bad angle. If anybody else finds other pictures, please post them here.
@ Monydad
What are you trying to say? That we should make an extra effort to be social because our dorm isn’t conducive to it, that we should try to be friends with our suite-mates, or that our situation just seems crappy in general? I’m not worried about making friends on a campus with 3000+ other 18 year olds with no other friends there either, but I also don’t want to be in a dorm where nobody’s friendly.

What I was trying to say was: I was just responding, honestly, to request of post #1.

Extrapolation to your situation is imperfect, so you have to draw your own conclusions.

4 above seems to confirm my older experience re: the social layout, so if I was doing the concluding it would be maybe your #1: “we should make an extra effort to be social because our dorm isn’t conducive to it…”

But maybe your experience will be different altogether. For one thing, if most everybody there, in your suite and dorm, are freshmen with a common interest in forging relationships, that alone is potentially a huge difference from my stay there. And if you happen to really mesh with your suitemates, that alone will make your experience there far different than mine was. Hopefully that will be the case.

I’d be reluctant to affirmatively assert your #3, that your situation just seems “crappy in general”, since I’m so far removed from the current situation at this point. It pretty much was that way for me, then. Hopefully not for you, now.

BTW I don’t recall any big issue with the size of my room there, but it was a long time ago.

So Im in a suite with 7 guys…I’m wondering if there is just one shower, one sink, and one toilet. Does anyone know if there are more than just one of each?

I don’t recall, but I also don’t recall any big problems with this aspect.

Guys, I managed to land a quintuplet at High Rise 5.
Does anyone know how that works out?

the single picture is accurate…most singles arent that much bigger (except maybe in balch)

the lounge picture posted on the first page seems to be that of the skylounge…

all rooms have the same bed more or less…

as far as bed bugs go, i think they now replaced the old mattresses with plastic/waterproof ones…

the only thing that sucked was sharing a restroom with 6 other guys…
