I've always been quite smitten with the practice of hiking, and so was wondering in my fellow CCers shared this passion of mine.

So, to begin:
Where do tend to hike (mountains, forests, beaches, etc.)?
What type of hikes do you go on (regarding their difficulty and length, etc.)?
How often do you hike?
Do you hike alone, or with a friend, or maybe a pet?

I really want this thread to be open ended, so feel free to add any interesting points of discussion.

Personally, I've really only had the chance to climb the nearby mountains and walk the local deserts, but my recent acquisition of a driver's license (and fuel efficient car!) should soon change that.

So far I've only gone on short to medium length (3 miles to 14 miles) day hikes, although I hope to go on more weekend and trekking in the near future.

I go on about three or so ~7 mile hikes on any given fortunately weathered school week, mostly on the weekends (only times when I could manage legitimate transport), and maybe 5-7 times a week on the cooler vacation weeks. Summer hasn't seen me on a hike in a while ( :( ), but it'll be cooler soon. :)

I usually go with a friend whenever I can find one, but my trusty golden (retriever) is always willing to venture out with me. :)

I hike a lot in the mountains (we’re in a valley surrounded by them, so it’s easy…) mostly in the summer, since in the school year there’s sports and homework, so not much time for leisurely hiking

Usually just 1-2 hour hikes, on days I don’t feel like running…mostly with my dog (a HUGE black lab ), sometimes my mom

So far my furthest is 18 miles, but my friends and I are going on a 24 mile hike over a mountain range in the national park this weekend (sounds kind of brutal, but it should be fun)

Oooh, new question: What does everyone bring with them when going out on hikes?

I usually bring seemingly inordinate amounts of water (3 or so liters for my mooring saunters), but I tend to drink it all, and a lot is lost to sweat, especially if it’s hot out.

I also carry a cellphone and wallet with me wherever I go, so that’s included too.

I also wear a hat and sunscreen.

I bring books with me too; I wear large cargo shorts and everything its in there, so the huge pockets that they have contain a book, water, and sometimes other stuff.

well i’ll add on anyway.
i like hiking. when i lived in boston, i’d hike the mountains in MA, VT, and NH. when i lived in hawaii I’d hike the mountains and gulches there. i live in DC now and i haven’t had the chance to hike here yet, but i’ve only been here a month.

I hike in the jungle mostly, some regular forest, some desert, and some lava fields. you usually have to cross many streams where i hike. (well only in the jungle of course )
recently i’ve gone for 3-6 mile day hikes. i go alone or with my golden retriever. usually alone though, because she’s a wimp
i take a lot of water, my car key, my knife, and an ace bandage. and dog stuff if she comes with me.

My friends and I go hiking in Manoa Valley every break. Usually 5-6 hour hikes, with some parts of the trail being what I’d consider dangerous. (and extremely muddy)

We bring
Bug repellant
Sandwiches
Lots of water

We’re planning on going backpacking on Maui or the Big Island this summer, but we’re not sure how dangerous that might be =P

I hike once in a while, usually alone or with a family member/cousin. I don’t know if it’s my HS thing or the area around here, but it’s really difficult to find a hiking companion around my age, they’ll say, “***, you loco, man, get away from me you ■■■■” 100%.

I don’t hike that much, but I hunt a LOT. Since we never have good luck, it’s essentially hiking. We hunt/hike just northwest of Montevideo, Minnesota, and let me tell you, it’s not fun at all, because that’s the pancake of the nation and the scenery is non existent.

There’s a fair chance that I’ll be going to the University of Washington-Seattle, and If I do, I’m definitely going to make a habit of hiking, since that’s so close to the cascades and other places like that that are perfect for hiking. I might do backpacking too.

Mountains and some forests. I don’t do it as regularly as I would like to, I’m more of an avid mtb-er.

But in February my Dad and I hiked in Peru, not too far from Machu Picchu. And at the end of 8th Grade (beginning of the summer before 9th Grade) I hiked Half Dome in Yosemite. Beautiful, beautiful place.
