Any other Southerners?

So, any other southerners applying/planning to attend Tulane? I've been looking at the stats on the website regarding geographical diversity, and was just wondering what you other southerners thought about going to school with a bunch of "yankees." Would any of you from the South really consider yourselves "Southern" (note: not exactly redneck, backwoods, deliverance, etc. or even country, just Southern)?

I'll be applying next year, and I'm southern. (Living in NC, from New Orleans, although New Orleans is a region unto itself.) I know people down in the city think of all the Tulane students as rich white New Englanders though, haha!

I'm poor white and from Simsboro LA, about 600 people here. I eat deer and squirrel and all sorts of country things lol. So I'm Southern and country-ish. I'm different from a lot of country folks though.

D is a freshman from Louisiana. While she has met a lot of kids from LA and TX, most of her friends are from the New York and Chicago areas. D tells me that it is considered "cool" to be a Southern student at Tulane.

I'm from Baton Rouge (so, definitely southern but not exactly "country") and am seriously considering attending in the fall. It's a popular choice for people in my high school; we have about a dozen people go every year.

anonymityyy- I know exactly what you mean. I've heard the student body described as a just a bunch of New England kids that couldn't get into HYP, so they decided to come down South and "civilize" us. hahaha. I don't wanna be civilized. I don't like wearing shoes.

Also, I'm glad to hear that there will be significant Southern population. Nice to meet all y'all.

Okay, I am not southern (I'm from CT, so it's pretty northern) but I just want you to know that we seriously have a lot in common and you have NOTHING to worry about!

We will not civilize you... I don't think haha. And, for the record, I don't wear shoes in the summer and wouldn't ever if it was warmer year round. Oh and I live in the boonies... and can say ya'll so we're all good. :D

I'm from Alabama, which I guess qualifies as a southern state. I feel pretty neutral about going to school with a lot of kids from northern states. Excited if anything to meet people from new areas. I wouldn't consider myself extremely "southern", but I do hang with some pretty redneck crowds from time to time. I'm not sure I'll be attending yet, but really the diversity of the student body is one of the main things attracting me to Tulane. I don't really want to go to college with my same crew from high school so I'm hoping it comes through.

MY s is a freshman this year. We are from Georgia. There were a lot of freshmen from the greater metro Atlanta area this year. His roommate is from a VERY small town in NE Mississippi. His roommate is very nice, but I must admit I had a little trouble understanding him at first! :o

Im coming from TN, BUT I moved here a couple years ago from Chicago, so not southern.....

I'm from Minnesota, does that mean I get lumped in with all the northeastern kids? Also, if theres one thing I can expect from Tulane, its people pointing out my minnesotan accent for the first week or 2 of school. It happens whenever I talk to someone not from Minnesota / the midwest.

Well, if you have a strong MinnesOOOOOOtan accent, it is charming and yes, people anywhere outside of the region are likely to comment on it!

"His roommate is from a VERY small town in NE Mississippi. His roommate is very nice, but I must admit I had a little trouble understanding him at first! "

You should hear the south MS accent. : )

"I'm from Minnesota, does that mean I get lumped in with all the northeastern kids?"

No, it means you get lumped in with all the SMART kids who'd rather spend February sun bathing than spend it ice fishing.

I'm from texas, so I guess I'm pretty southern.
I don't consider myself part of the "deep south" or anything like that though.
I do say y'all alot though :]

True that NewHope33. I would be lying if I said the new orleans weather didn't make Tulane appeal to me more than it already did.

I've applied to Tulane and I live in Georgia. :D

I've heard from many uptown homeowners that Tulane loves to attract Harvard rejects, because they're great for our economy. Many people sell their uptown homes to the parents of these kids to live in while attending Tulane. The local hoodlums enjoy robbing these young rich kids as well. Don't be fooled by the affluent surrounding neighborhood. It's best not to walk around outside of campus at night.

However, the campus is well policed. There is definitely a diverse population. Although I have mostly been in the library or the rec center this year, I would say that I noticed a lot of the "bohemian" type, a lot of minorities, and a lot of international kids. Don't think I saw any "preppies". Our warm weather wouldn't favor that, anyway.

Excellent school. Two of my nephews were lucky to attend, as well as my husband. Would probably be sending my son there if they hadn't shut down the engineering department.

Engineering isnt totally shut down, but is scaled waaaay back.

A re-engineered dept, as it were...
