Just curious... I know there has to be more of you out there.

Yes. I’m planning on applying for Fall or Winter 2011.

I recommend all vets look into the Resumed Undergraduate Education program at Brown. I was admitted under this program last year, and I am trying to bolster the number of vets here.

applied and accepted to St. John’s College Annapolis for the fall 11’. I sent my deposit check last week. Now I’m just killing time in the desert until then.

Another one here, EAS is June 5, 2011 after 5 years AD Marine Corps. Just realized last week I need to get applications in before I take off next month on a 7 month float. Taking the ACT Sept. 11 and hoping I can get everything squared away before we leave in late Sept. Its gonna be a rush but not impossible. Any advice? This website is great and I’ve already learned a lot in the few minutes I have spent browsing the forums. Thanks!

I was in the same position as you last year. I was also in the Marine Corps and basically had to deal with the whole process from the middle of the desert via SAT phone and the occasional MW trip.

I suggest you do the common app to save time, and do a lot of research in each schools sub-forum here on CC. Work real hard on your essay and try and incorporate as much as you can about the military. This is where you will make your money and stand out from high schools kids who may have better stats than you. I literally sat down after a patrol one day and recounted it within the essay and used it to put my time in the military in perspective.

Also, dont be afraid to apply to schools that seem out of reach. Veterans are really in a unique position. The average GPA of my freshman class is more than half a point higher than mine. So long as you have SAT/ACT scores that show a school you’ll be able to do the coursework your high school GPA won’t really factor in much. I met so many Marines that I knew were intelligent but blew off high school and didn’t have the confidence to go for a better four year school. A lot of these guys are going to CC (which is fine) but in many cases not the best place for them.

Don’t expect the Marine Corps to do anything to help you in the process. At my SEP/TAPs class the instructor literally said in the first 5 minutes that there would be nothing for those of us going to school…which was at least half of us. I suggest that you try and contact your old high school and talk to a college counselor there. Mine was thrilled that I came to her for help and did a lot for me.

If you’ve got any other questions feel free to message me.

D is not a veteran but she is getting the post 9/11 GI bill and is applying for Fall 2011. I am reading here in the veteran;s space since she is getting these benefits. My h is still active duty.

My son just got out of the Marines last month after a five year enlistment (one Iraq deployment). Our experience so far with the Post 911 GI bill is that veterans are very attractive to colleges, especially the private ones. From what I have been able to gather so far is that the typical veteran student did not do well in high school but is now highly motivated. Elite schools are looking at veterans as students who can really contribute positively to the student body. They are very disciplined, motivated, focused and mature. Also, as a veteran, the student is bringing with them are lot of federal financial aid which is of great help to the school. This means that the veteran/student will be looking for less financial aid. Check out the Yellow Ribbon Schools. You will also looked at differently from the senior high school student pool. So high school grade deficits are really not that important. Set your sights high and don’t be intimidated by the admissions process.

I’ll be applying to Texas A&M and UT for Petroleum Engineering. Taking classes at a california CC college right now… the new GI bill is pretty awesome. Guy from my CC got accepted into Stanford for the fall, former marine, really cool story.

Former vet here, USMC,

I will be applying to pretty much every college you can think of. I have 60 units under my belt with an upward trend GPA. Although my qualifications are not the best, I’m just hoping to cast the widest net possible.

Wish me luck!

Soon to be retired vet here. I have a solid background in electronics as a tech and very good grades throughout my military carreer going to school wherever and whenever I could. I have amassed 178 credit hours with a gpa of 3.85. I recently graduated with a BS in organizational management from a private school program they have here on base, but it has been my lifelong dream to study engineering at a great school. I am hoping that my BS degree will not hurt me too much for being accepted. I will be using my post 9-11 gi bill and I hope that this will help me in my quest for being accepted. It will be hard after getting a steady paycheck for so many years, but I do have a little savings and the housing stipend along with retired pay will help a lot. I am committed to going to school -I would like to study electical engineering in Texas… prefferably UT Austin, but as I understand it the addmissions process is very selective. I do know that I will be successful wherever I end up, but just getting in I am finding is very difficult! I am working on tweeking my essays now and am working on exactly what I want to say. Am I totally screwed with having recently completed a BS? I plan on appying to Rice, UTA, TAMU. Should I look at schools out of Texas as well? I am open for ChemE as well as CE and Environmental.

I am currently an E-5(SGT) stationed in Wiesbaden, Germany. My MOS is 35T. I am 26 years old and I will have 8.5 years in service once I ETS in a few months. I applied as a transfer student with 63 credit hours to U Pitt, Penn State, OSU, TCU, UT-Austin, Texas Tech and University of Houston. I applied to these schools the traditional way and got accepted to all of them. (I am from Texas). I will enter as a freshman. I encourage all of my fellow vets to not get discouraged and apply to a 4 year university if that’s what you want to do. Ohio State University was my #1 choice so that is where I am headed starting the Fall of 2011. I wish all of you the best of luck and thanks for your service! :)

Applying to Northeastern University in Boston for Fall 11’. 5 years in the 82nd Airborne Division 11B.

Ross, I spent 4 years as Marine Infantry and am currently in my Freshman year at Northeastern. If you have any question or need help let me know.

IgnoranceIsBliss,

Hey thanks man, I was infantry too. I am just waiting to hear back from Northeastern now to see if i got in. Im going for criminal justice, what about you??

Applying to: UChicago, Carnegie Mellon, Columbia, Texas and Texas A&M.

I’m a transfer so I won’t find out for a couple months, really hoping for CMU!

I’m a Finance/Accouting double major. If you decide to attend here make sure you get in touch with the Student Veterans Group. We’ll help you get paid and get everything straightened out.

Thanks again, ill probably be asking you alot of questions. So Keep in touch man.

Applying to Columbia, UT Austion, Baylor and University of Houston here.

10 year Navy vet, just finished my 1st year at CC… Man waiting on these admission decisions reminds me of waiting on advancement results! lol

Applied to Columbia, Uchicago, and Stanford.

My wife and I are both army vets. Just got out in December and she’ll be done in July. We should be able to make it just in time for Fall 2011.
