Any Overqualified Applicant Got Deferred by UofC?

yeah dude bestswimmer the only scenario where I can see them making a legit deferral/rejection to your friend is if his teacher recs say he’s a racist or he beats people up after school hahahahaha. But im 99.9 % sure someone as legit as the one you described wouldnt do bad things like that lol

“Btw, my friend that got deferred from Chicago had Silver medal at an internaitonal olympiad competition, 2300+ SAT, went to one of the most selective summer program, USAXO*2, Siemens Semi-Finalist, published many poems, two varsity sports qualified for states. He also got into both Caltech and MIT.”

Is ‘your friend’ actually you? It’s okay to say you got deferred if that’s the case.

I think why your friend was deferred was he may not have shown a certain intellectual spark or vitality that U of C seems to look for. It might have been a lack of creativity in the essays. Or if the teacher recs just said something like “He came to class and smiled a lot and got an A” and didn’t show him being a “catalyst in the classroom” or whatever.

But if he got into MIT he should be pretty content with himself, unless U of C was his first choice.

Yeah, your friend seems a little ‘Type A’ for Chicago; I like to think we’re a school of chill people :).

Hahah :)

10char

it absolutely does not make sense for schools within top 10 range to do any yield protection by preemptively rejecting highly qualified candidates. The admissions outcomes at this level for qualified candidates are such crap shoot there is NO way U Chicago admissions officers can reliably predict which of the students they would like to admit if not for the yield concern will actually be accepted by the HYP schools and will also reliably reject U Chicago offer because they got accepted by these schools. If they are such amazing fortune tellers, they should employ this amazing psychic power and become instant billionaires in the stock market.

The famous Tufts Syndrome is called that, because Tufts is like top 30’ish school (± 5) with well known reputation as an Ivy+S+M+C(chicago)+D(duke) backup. The distance between Chicago and MIT is so miniscule in the bigger picture, there is NO way to reliably predict which students who were too good for U Chicago will be accepted by MIT and visa versa.

Yield protection wil be a concern for George Washington (via a vis Georgetown) for instance, but NOT between MIT and CHicago.

UChicago seems to me to place a lot of emphasis on the essays, and what they reveal about the applicant themselves…which for me is a good thing.

Your friend probably had an off note somewhere in the application that, for some reason, caused his decision. Chicago is at basically the same level as HYP; they have no need to play stupid admissions games with “overqualified applicants”.

i’m pretty ****ed off not about getting deferred but about the people who got in over me. I mean common, can you make me feel any worse by having noobs get in over me?
My Overall stats: 3.98 UW
2200 SAT 800/790/740/760 8 AP’s All 5’s
Siemens Semfinalist, 3 Scientific Papers
Pretty good EC’s. Officer positions

Lets compare that to this guy who I have no clue why the **** he got chosen any of us who got deferred:
GPA: 4.2/6.0 weighted
2.8/4.0 unweighted
SATI: 610 Math 560 CR 600 Writing Composite
SATII: Chemistry 610, Math I 620
Rank: 93/488
ECs: 4 years marching band, NHS, spanish honor society, BPA, ARC, Interact, Red Cross, Chess Club, Key Club, Debate/speech, FBLA, FFA, DECA, Future Problem Solvers, StuCo
admitted to u of chicago

Also, let’s remember that at Chicago, we have merit scholarships which have been traditionally used to lure the best and the brightest. And with great results: this year, we had 3 Rhodes scholarships to MIT’s 1.

It makes no sense to deny (much less DEFER, which makes no sense if you intend to deny said applicant at a later date) overqualified students when you can just lure them to your school with merit scholarships.

I would be mad too, azndarkvader. There’s a large degree of randomness. Well, not exactly randomness, but just the fact that each college is really admitting a CLASS, and not just an individual student. What ruined you is most likely someone whose application was very similar to yours and, no offense, slightly better. They can only have so many people like you. But wow…your EC’s are great. I feel bad for you. You will get in somewhere amazing though!

^ vader, cuz UofC can do whatever they want

Am I not qualified enough? lol.

[ul]
[] SAT I (breakdown): 800 M, 790 W, 750 CR (2340, single sitting)

^ Nerd? 10char

^ Me? I don’t think so… at least it wouldn’t have gotten me deferred…

You’ll probably get in regular round

Yeah… I dunno. I mean I had more qualifications too, but now its like really wow?

i feel ya. btw 2 questions

 1. HOW many of you who got deferred were science/math majors ?
 2. How many of you who were accepted were science/math majors?

I got deferred with an 800/750=1550 on SAT I, 800/800/800 on SAT 2, and 36 on ACT (all single sitting) with a 4.0 GPA (ranked 3/125). I’ve also qualified for USAMO multiple times.
I don’t think I’m overqualified but I’m pretty sure I’m qualified.

well i got rejected (not deferred, but rejected) by mit and i got into uchicago. am i just too qualified for mit?

uchicago understands that people with good scores and gpa can survive the school, but they’re trying to create a unique environment of students. so more is focused on the essay and interview. and like they say at their open houses, they get applications from thousands of students who would perfectly fit at the college, but they can only admit so many. if they need trumpet players, they’ll admit trumpet players, but who knows which years they’ll need trumpet players? it’s all up to them. they’re looking for something specific, but there’s no way to pinpoint what.

i didn’t get into mit because they were looking for something else. if you got deferred, and are qualified for uchicago, there’s an excellent shot you’ll get in in april. at least you didn’t get rejected.

exactly. thats why I’m wondering how many of you guys who were admitted did not major in science.

I got in majoring in science :)
