any parents of potential davidson or sewanee students?

Among some of the other colleges my D has applied to, she has been accepted at Sewanee EA and is awaiting all other RD choices. If any parents have children who applied to these two schools,I would like to ask what your child likes best about these schools.

When we visited Davidson with D1, she was very taken with the culture around the Student Center. When we walked in, it was full of people - students hanging out around a grand piano, students and faculty laughing and having conversations in seating nooks, people heading into the Belk Family Theatre complex. She and I returned for another visit and she found all the faculty and students who met with her to be very generous with their time and sincere in their willingness to be of assistance to her. We attended a production of the Royal Shakespeare Company in the theatre (they do a two-week campus residency there every other year) and we were blown away. When D1 eventually decided to go to Harvard, she expressed a little remorse about having to not pursue Davidson. The next year, I was responding to a CC student who had to choose between Davidson and Brown, so I offered to ask D1, who had also visited Brown. D1’s response was “Davidson - definitely.”

I am familiar with both schools, although I did not have a kid attend either. I visit Sewanee quite often. Davidson is closer to a major metropolitan area, if that matters to you. Sewanee is so awesome, but I know it can get to feeling small for some students by junior or senior year. Both are wonderful schools. I would give the academic edge to Davidson. Sewanee does have a large drinking culture- just be aware of that.

My niece is at Davidson and loves it.

MY s spent a summer at Davidson. His best memories-- a frisbee golf course and they do your laundry for you!

Is there a place at either of these schools for a kid who is a bit more individualistic and not a sundress-wearing pearl earrings kind of girl? My daughter has visited both schools but classes were not in session at the time.

Is the Davidson culture less drinking focused than Sewanee?

Most all of the schools my daughter has applied to are rural and/or very small LAC so that isn’t a problem it’s a plus.

I went to High School with a fair amount of folks who earned admission to Swanee and they all went on to do very well in this life.

Over the years that school has become more, uh, ‘modern’ in its outlook towards certain thing from what I have heard and that is a good thing.

Is there a place at either of these schools for a kid who is a bit more individualistic and not a sundress-wearing pearl earrings kind of girl? Davidson gets the nod.

Is the Davidson culture less drinking focused than Sewanee? There is a drinking culture at both (and almost all other schools). Davidson is far less isolated which may give them the nod here, too. More off-campus entertainment options.

That being said a decidedly artistic, non-partying girl I know attended Sewanee and loved it. She is now at WashU in the fully-funded doctoral program of her choice and feels Sewanee gave her all she could ask for in support, guidance, and educational opps.

This is a personal choice and a term-time visit would sure help, if possible.

S is a freshman at Davidson. Nothing but good things to say (if only I were 30 years younger). There is undeniably a drinking culture, but it seems well-controlled, and from what I can gather does not interfere with the priority on academics for the vast majority of students. S does not report a shortage of things to do, and he’s someone who really likes to fill up his plate with activities.

When D was looking at schools, H & I fell in love with Davidson. We would have loved to have gone to school there! D was not so enamored, though, for various reasons (nothing negative, just not quite for her). Funny how schools “speak” to some & not to others!

W and I would have been your classmates! I had a fantasy about our kids all going there and hanging around the area so that W and I could retire there. The kids are all elsewhere, but Davidson is still a pretty nice retirement fantasy.

My H and I considered retiring there, too! We even went so far as to visit a real estate office while S was visiting the campus. I loved the town of Davidson and the Lake Norman area, but we decided that NC was too cold for us.

Cold would not be an issue for us - we’re in New Hampshire. North Carolina seems like a tropical fantasy by comparison.

I live in a town near Davidson. I love the town of Davidson. I know a few kids who have gone to Davidson. They have all been very happy.

Sewanee and the Monteagle aren’t bad retirement places either!

we decided that NC was too cold for us

Hehehehe … it’s 27 degrees & 6 inches of snow has fallen (so far) here in Michigan. :)

Thanks for replies to each of you.

It was about 84 here yesterday and we’re running the A/C! I feel for you, Kelsmom!

Sewanne just cut their tuition and fees by 10% if that is a concern.
