Any INTENDED Peace & Conflicts (UC Berkeley) Majors out there?

Just wondering!

haha this is the first time ive heard of this major

■■■■■ you trollin’

ya seriously, what is it you’re planning on doing with this major again?

well, I have to confess that I applied for that major too. If admitted, I’m planning to switch to political economy though. My GPA is 3.9, good essay and some ECs. I have already been admitted to UCLA and UCSD, but UCB is my first choice anyway.

what is a Peace and conflicts major?? That actually sounds interesting?

Yep- it’s my intended major, too. Way more interesting than regular ol’ political science.

sup kernl! long time no see! How’s the military treatin ya?

kernl!!! omg how are you???

miss u girl

I’m political economy too.

This major is about observing social reform/justice/change.

I plan to double major in this and Political Science because I know it will be harder to simply “switch” majors.

Seeing that its easier to get int PACS and given that Berkeley gives transfer students an additional semester to declare/prep for their major I thought this was the best way make the most out of Berkeley (same $$ for different units).

Side note: I was admitted into UCLA’s Political Science major.

@ksForBerkeley - yeah, same plan-sorta! I don’t think people really ONLY major in PACS…

@solidblu - I plan to GET IN BERKELEY with that major. …And it simply sounds like fascinating material to me! I simply WANT to learn about it along side my Political Science education at UC Berkeley. :)

PACS description:

The Peace and Conflict Studies (PACS) major involves the systematic and interdisciplinary analysis of confrontation and cooperation among individuals, groups and nations. The curriculum addresses issues of social injustice, poverty, and ecological deterioration as they relate to war and explores the social, psychological, economic and political dimensions of conflict resolution.

yeah, PACS seems like a very interesting major to study, but what can you do with it once you graduate? Political economy looks like a more viable career path, especially in this economy. From what I hear, it is easy to switch majors once you get in, especially if they are in the same department. I have not taken calc 2 yet, that’s why I decided not to apply directly to Political Economy.

@ks - Applying to college is strategic and ksForBerkeley, you got it down! I hope we both get in!

And yes, it should be easier. Here is a part of an email response from a UC Berkeley representative:

"The major you apply for as an applicant isn’t binding and you’ll still have to apply for the major you want when you get here. Each major has it’s own prerequisites and as long as you’ve met them you will be admitted; however, capped majors MUST be applied for in or immediately following your first semester (check with the major for the exact details, as each major has its own deadlines and procedures).

To determine whether it’s feasible to complete a double major, add up all the courses for each major that you will not already have completed when you arrive at Berkeley and divide that number by the number of semesters you’ll have to finish your degree (5 for double majors). You could also complete some over the summers. You should be taking no more than 3 or 4 courses per semester and preferably no more than 2 per summer, and even that might be a little heavy."

tl;dr: You can apply for capped majors a semester after you are admitted, as long as you have completed the prerequisites.

I also hope we both get in!!! We just need to wait 5 more days!!!
I’ve worked so hard for having a shot at Berkeley that I did not want to take chances and decided to apply for a major that I was somewhat confident I will get in. Except for calc 2, all my prereq for pilitical economy are done, so I don’t feel like I will be cheating the system by trying to switch majors after admittance. Anyway, I’m really excited about the future and really hope I’ll be a proud Cal student this Fall!

@foothill i’m also in the IAS department, applying to Development Studies

If admitted to Cal I will be declaring a PACS double major. It looks incredibly interesting and goes right along with my future career.

Is anyone else taking PACS10 this summer?

That major sounds interesting… What’s it deal with and what career paths does it have

mikei - what will be your other major? and what did you apply to CAL with?
