Any Physics Majors aplying for Grad School? Need Advice

Hey guys I’ve been away from school in general for a few years. I wish to apply for graduate school but I don’t think my chances are high for grad school since I’ve managed to do virtually no research as an undergrad…any advice?

What have you been doing in the interim? My understanding that PhD programs want to see research because they need to know you can do the research required in a PhD program.

It sort of depends on your GRE scores and GPA. If you have a great academic record but little research, you might be able to get into a moderately selective program. The most highly selective ones are difficult because all the applicants are very strong academically plus the best of them have significant research experience.

You don’t say if you are interested in a MS or PhD. The former, it a bit easier to get into with little research experience but often you will be expected to self fund. If you provide a bit more information like your academic record, the kind of degree you are seeking, the reason for pursuing a graduate degree, and which schools your are looking at, it will be easier to offer advice.

My son is a senior physics major who recently applied to various grad schools for aerospace engineering. I would say he hasn’t done much research at school but had a summer internship at NASA in Maryland where he learned a ton. He has been accepted at U of So. Cal, U of CO/Boulder, U of IL/Champagne-Urbana, and U of Maryland.

Any chance for you to do an internship somewhere that would get you some research experience?
