Any point in including NHS, CSF, etc?

I know some people do a lot with these clubs, but I haven't. I've done about 10 volunteer hours for NHS (11-12) and nothing else. Should I just leave it out of my EC/awards sections?

My D will include it in her list. At her hs, there is a pretty strenuous selection process to get in in the first place. So, membership itself is an honor. If it’s different in your hs, you might consider leaving it out, but why?

Is she putting it under awards? The selection process at my high school isn’t very strenuous, though I don’t suppose there’s much harm in adding it.

Yes. Under awards.

I don’t think NHS or CSF should be listed under the awards section. They seem more extracurricular-oriented.

^That’s what I thought. I’m really not sure whether to include them now.

You should include them. I just don’t think that they should be listed under the awards section.

^Why should I include them if I haven’t done anything significant?

^Why shouldn’t you?

They were both clubs that you were in. You might as well include them.

I imagine that it would simply look like application padding. There’s also a chance that it would distract adcoms from my main EC’s. I’m struggling to see the possible benefits.

If your other extracurricular activities fill up all of the spaces, then you probably don’t need to. I don’t think that listing them would “hurt” you though.

^Thanks :). Any other advice?

You’re in it, you’ve done the hours…I’m generally pretty “why would you put that in your application you do it like an hour a month” activities-section-wise, but I can’t imagine a good case for not including NHS. I don’t know what the other thing is.

^California Scholarship Federation, where we literally meet once a month for an hour. I think I’ll skip that one.

NHS was only 11/12, and I don’t have a position, so I’m borderline on whether to include it…

Will adcoms penalize me for not being in NHS?

^Doubtful. It’s not necessary to be a member of an honor society.

Most people will make their app a laundry list.

^Haha, so maybe it’s better if we don’t?

I’d say no. Don’t include it if it’s an insignificant activity (no leadership or impact, one hour a month commitment, etc). It might come off as application padding as you said. However, if you acheived something significant in NHS/CSF/etc, go for it.

Sorry, double post.
