If so, what is it like being a social science major there? Do you feel very much in the minority? How is the department?

I’m not a polysci major, but I have friends who are. They love the department and the personal attention that they get from their professors (many of whom are top in their fields). Many MIT labs receive government contracts, and many students are interested in politics and take polysci classes, so you definitely won’t be alone.

Thanks! ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

I personally knew only two poli sci. majors as an undergrad, and one is a professor at a major university–not a bad ratio. (I actually don’t know what happened to the other one.) It is a top 10 department, with particular strengths in quantitative analysis. Latin-American studies seemed to also be a strength–not sure if that has changed.

Yes, you will feel like you are in a minority as a major (though plenty of people take poli sci. classes). However, you would probably have a lot of interaction with professors since it is a smaller department.
