Any questions about ISL schools?

isl league-- even though Tabor is not in the isl, Tabor doesn't do PG year. I agree it is gorgeous and full of school spirit, though! The kids seem very happy--especially if Buzzard's Bay is something that they really value. It is a unique place.

What about Brooks school? Does it have a " jock culture "?

isl league and other parents with ISL students,
Does your daughter's school (or any other ISL school) have more female or male teachers?
I have read somewhere that in a coed setting, the success of a student is correlated with the gender of his/her teacher in a classroom. I.e, a male student does better with a male teacher, and a female student does better with a female teacher, and this type of correlation does not exist in single gender schools.

Periwinkle and isl league, thank you for your reply.

Another aspect of the "jock" reputation of any school, is how many kids from a school go to college for a sport, i.e. are recruited athletes. This can be as much as 30% and sometimes represents an extremely large proportion of the kids attending the most selective colleges. Can be difficult to find out, but it is useful information about the culture of a school, and esp. its college matriculation stats. (Not intending to start a discuss about the merits of athletic recruiting, but it's a piece of background that sometimes doesn't get looked at.)

Interestedmom5,

The College Counselor at my school mentioned that at another ISL school more than 10%! of the class had already been accepted at an Ivy league for athletics by january of this year.

Hi,
I was wondering how they match up roommates for boarding students?
Is there a survey that is taken and the roommates are matched up based on their personalities?
Thank you!

For Musica:
If you choose Fenn, you will be going through this process again in two years - although it does open up an entire new range of choices, especially in the boarding realm. In terms of Nobles and Belmont Hill - your son is very lucky to have been accepted at both. The revisit days will be very important for you and he to get a better feel for the schools and which one suits him as they are very different. In terms of values, IMHO Belmont Hill is tops - they truly know how to educate boys and their headmaster is one of the best anywhere. Nobles excellent school also but very different in tone. PM if want more info. Good luck with decision.

Musica and anyone interested...

I'm a junior (female) at Nobles now, and have been there since 7th grade. My brother is a senior at Belmont Hill. Both schools are incredible in academics and have very similar college matriculation. My brother had a very successful experience at Belmont based largely on his athletic success. The school is a bit more conservative, very rigorous and uses traditional values and the all boys environment to instil character that is highly respected among the ISL and after graduation. I know of experiences, however, where kids have been less than satisfied if they are not athletes. School spirit is HUGE at Bel Hill though, so if your son is not an athlete, but enjoys watching/participating,that is also welcomed.

Nobles is more liberal, and puts HUGE emphasis on inter-community relationships (student/teacher, primarily). We put in a new Arts Center two years ago that has been really enjoyable for anyone interested in music, theatre, visual art, or musical theatre... The space itself rivals anything I have seen. The community environment makes absolutely sure to put equal emphasis on every extra curricular activity....so every big play, concert, or coffee house is announced just as enthusiastically as the New England championship game that weekend. That said, Nobles is incredibly competative. Everyone has ample opportunity to try everything, but the strive for excellence is never ending...sports, grades, ensemble chairs...you name it.

Both schools are AMAZING, again, and i know both offer revisits which I can't say enough are absolutely KEY in the decision process. Congrats to anyone accepted to either and let me know if anyone has questions. Love to help.

I know that Winsor is not in the ISL, but it is a Boston area school.

I’m desperate for candid information on Winsor. Can anyone out there help me?

JimC,

I only know about Winsor through families who have/had children there. All seemed very happy with the school, and kept sending younger siblings there. These families are from communities with excellent public schools such as Newton and Lexington. What are your options other than Winsor? That might make a difference in any advice you may be receiving.

Good luck!

What are your opinion of BBN vs Belmont Hill?Thank you for your help.

I have heard this weekend that BBN is one of the top schools academicly but also super preppy.

Your comments about the ISL schools seem very off, olf info.

Siemom and tiz612, your insights and information are greatly appreciated!

How about St.George’s? Any advice?

We visited and loved the school. You can not beat this campus! Academics are good. We only met one teacher though so hard to comment on this aspect of the school.

We visited as well and thought it was a great place. Nice little surf spots & fishing down the hill would have lured my California boy away too often for his own good:)

Thank you! How about the food( I heard that the food was not very good a few year ago)?
