Any questions about Pepperdine?

There is some public transportation, my freshman year I took the bus with a couple friends to Santa Monica once.

But to get to LA, you’ve basically got to have a car, or a friend with a car. Last year on campus they started a program where you could rent one of three cars on campus for a specific about of time (ranging from hours to days, I believe), but it’s kinda expensive.

I’ve never had my own car with me on campus, but I’ve had enough friends with cars that I’ve never had a problem if I needed to get somewhere.

Oh, which makes me ask another question… Are freshmen allowed to have cars on campus? And is there enough parking for that?

Yes, and parking is free. They just sent me my sticker in the mail (you have to sign up @ thepermitstore.com). Although - the parking lot is far away from the dorms - you can always take the shuttle during business hours.

The parking lot’s not that far, maybe a 5 minute walk if you’re in one of the dorms closest to main campus. If you’re at the other end, or in Towers or in Lovernich, the parking lot’s very close (of course, then you have to walk farther to get to main campus).

It is on the small side, though, and sometimes fills up, and then you have to find a spot on the road (leading to difficulties with parallel parking on hills).

So glad I drive a big truck. So does Pepperdine have any “preview days” or something along those lines, where prospective students can stay in the dorms and shadow a student?

^ I was wondering the same thing. I know most colleges have an opportunity for prospective seniors to shadow a student and stay overnight in one of the dorms, but I didn’t see anything on Pepperdine’s website…

If you want to shadow a student and stay overnight, try contacting the school and seeing if you can set something up. I’m honestly not sure how they deal with that.

The only way to have an over-night stay is to plan it yourself with a friend on campus - they are not offered through Pepperdine. Also, they do have days for seniors “looking” for colleges - and they will also be happy to let you sit through some classes. I sat through two classes last year and it really helped to sell my decision to attend Pepperdine.

i was wondering about what SAT scores they look for? I got a 1690. Should I retake them? I have a 3.79 unweighted gpa and a 3.92 weighted gpa. Is that enough to make up for my test scores? Thanks for your help! :)

The website says the average admit has a 1913 SAT I and a 3.79 GPA for academic courses only (I would bet that is weighted).

Thanks for your help!

This is just the thread I have been searching for
I’ve fallen in love with Pepperdine recently but I’m not too sure my grades will be able to get me in, and I’d love it if someone could tell me what’s up

3.3 academic gpa weighted - probably a 2.9-3.0 unweighted
2140 SAT CR/M/W 670/730/730
decent ECs like soccer, track, ASB
in addition, I’m not really sure if it matters much or not, I did some volunteer work in India with the Mother Teresa Foundation and I wasn’t sure if that could get me Brownie points because of Pepperdines religious affinity

Thanks for the help! :)

How is the Social Life? Is the campus empty on the weekends?

Wamoo— While your GPA is low, your SAT is well above the mean. I suggest writing excellent essays that especially highlight your volunteer work and religious convictions. With your ECs and SAT, you may have a chance. Also, I recommend using Pepperdine’s application over the Common App, which Pepperdine is going to allow starting this Fall. Pepperdine’s essay prompts focused on religion and service, hint.

michaln— Campus life is abundant. I regret going home on the weekends because of the fun my friends get into. Many in-state students do go home on the weekends, but there are usually student-led events to keep you busy.
Be warned, you won’t find wild drinking parties here. You will, however, find them ten minutes off campus. Kids that are more interested partying either do so off campus or go clubbing in Hollywood, 20-30 min. away, or USC.
It’s pretty nice though, my friends at UCLA get pretty annoyed when they’re studying for midterms and there’s a party down the hall. If you’re at Pepperdine and you’re free, you can always join the party at UCLA or wherever, but the trashing isn’t going on where you live. Get the advantage?

Thanks for the reply… Well if i were to go, I would be coming from out of state. So in turn, I would not be leaving for the weekends… So what percentage of students you guess leave for home on the weekends? Thanks for your Help.

michaln— I would say no more than 20% of freshmen. The general population is 50% out of state and 50% in.

This weekend for example, in my suite, there are six in-state students including myself and two out of state. Two in-staters are going home. The rest of us are signed up to take part in a campus-wide community service project called Step Forward Day, in which students and faculty take part in service activities throughout Los Angeles.

Hi gwu_girl,
Is Pepperdine generous with intl students? Thank you in advance.

I will be applying to colleges this fall. I have a fairly high GPA (4.7 weighted, 4.0 unweighted), a mediocre SAT score (1800s, will be retaking and hoping for 2000+), 4 leading board positions in some clubs at my school, A LOT of work experience, and a decent amount of community service. To attend Pepperdine, I want a full or almost full scholarship to the school. What are my chances of getting a full scholarship funded by the university?

Okay here it goes. I live in Arkansas and I am a senior.

 1. I go to a private christian school that is affiliated with the Church of Christ. The same church Pepperdine is affiliated with.
 2. I am student body treasurer of my school
 3. Key Club president. (key club is a club that focuses mainly on community service projects.)
 4. I have hundreds of hours of community service. I have done everything from cleaning up after hurricane Katrina, painting houses for free in the inner city of Memphis, TN.
 5. I have helped start a group at my church (Christianity in Action- also community service based.) I have a lot of community service hours.
 6. I have attended a Church of Christ church all of my life.
 7. I have a job and am a good leader.
 8. I am currently tied for 1st ranking in my class. Depending on this year, I will be either Valedictorian or Salutatorian.
 9. I have a GPA of 4.037.
 10. My ACT score is a 27. It needs some work, but I think I can bring it up.
 11. I have won a scholarship for Spanish (completing Spanish 1 and 2 in one year.)
 12. I have won my top awards and math awards.
 13. My resume is very long.

I am EXTREMELY nervous about being accepted to this school. What do you think I should try and do to improve my chances of getting in? From this information, do you think I will receive acceptance from Pepperdine? Sorry about the length.

ALL ANSWERS ARE APPRECIATED!

Oh, I also was accepted into a program called MASH. Medical Applications of Applied Sciences. I was one of 10 chosen from my county. I spent two weeks at an internship in a hospital. I received 85 hours at this internship. I would like to go into pre-med too.
