Any Questions about UCSD?

okay icic
thanks guys for the opinions =)
It really helps a lot!

@clarkfobes - Thanks for the reply – Are there labs for all the courses I listed or just for a few of them. Also can you confirm what you stated ( sounded like you are not too sure)-- that labs are included and are treated like TA hours.

@greenfield: Okay, I doubled checked with my friend and apparently, a lab is like another class. If you are taking the chem6 series, you need to take the lab, chemBL which is worth 3 units and its basically another class. You have lecture twice a week for an hour and a lab which is like 2 hours. Also, to answer your question, you have labs for physics and chem (the classes you listed). Physics labs are concurrent with the class whereas you only need to take one lab throughout your entire chem6series.

@clarkfobes - Thanks! That is about 20 hrs of load when you sign up for the lab also. That is not an easy work load

hello again!
i have a question about the competitiveness at UCSD… since math/science classes are graded on a curve, do people not collaborate as much when studying because they want to do better than their classmates? or do classmates study together without worrying about the curve?

when is orientation?

I got into both UCSD and UCLA. Should I choose UCSD over UCLA because my major at UCSD is pharmacological chemistry and I want to apply to Skaggs School of Pharmacy for graduate school? Will it REALLY improve my chances if I go to UCSD or my chances are about the same in either school?

@caseyklein17: What college are you? It differs for each college

hiii there iz me again. ive got a couple more questions:

1) in terms of housing, whats the most highly rated housing option?
2) is it true that the earlier you apply the better dorm you get?
3) i got into Warren. what’s the reputation for that college?
4) How big/small are the class sizes?
5) how’s the interaction with professors? do you normally get to know your professors and they know u?
6) Are there many internship opportunities?
7) I’ve heard that social life is a bit remote there, is that true? how so?

thx

Hows the sun god festival? Any reggae bands like slightly stoopid ever come down?

How many classes can you take on a pass/fail basis and how does this affect your transcript? Is it better if you choose not to take any on a pass/fail basis?

@jessx2009:

  1. in terms of housing, whats the most highly rated housing option?
live in the residence halls for freshmen, and if you want to meet people, try a triple?
  2. is it true that the earlier you apply the better dorm you get?
the earlier you apply, the higher you are on the list to get your preference. people usually want doubles.
  3. i got into Warren. what’s the reputation for that college?
People generally rank the GE’s as 2nd easiest… iono all colleges have their pros and cons
  4. How big/small are the class sizes?
some can have 300-400, some are as small as 20 people
  5. how’s the interaction with professors? do you normally get to know your professors and they know u?
just go to office hours and you will get to talk to the professors/tas
  6. Are there many internship opportunities?
Yes, just need to find them
  7. I’ve heard that social life is a bit remote there, is that true? how so?
No, its what you make out of it. Personally, I think theres are lot of events to attend, just gotta go find them.

@el2369: Okay, I haven’t officially been to one yet, but… I heard it’s bomb because everyone is stoked about the festival and social and like to get drunk and etc…
I dont think slight stoopid has come yet, but generally there are hip hop, alternative, rock, etc artists. This years headliners are Michelle Branch, Drake, Thrice, Z Trip, Designer Drugs, Relient K. To see the whole line up: www.sungodfestival.ucsd.edu

@foodlover: 25% of all your units can be taken on a P/NP basis. Classes for your major need to be taken on a letter grade basis whereas some classes like your GEs can be taken on a P/NP basis. Taking a class for p/NP does not affect your GPA. People usually like to change to a P/NP basis if they are getting a C or below since its a major blow to their GPAs

Thank you ucsandiego and Kings! That was really helpful and relieved some anxiety I had about the class. :)

I have a D in calc ap bc. will I be revoked for sure? I know someone that got in with a D but I think they did something. Let’s just say I do get a D by the end of the school year, are there any ways I can still get in? I do have a reason why my grade is so low. Can I write them a good letter explaining why I have such a low grade?

^No, you will be revoked. GET THAT GRADE UP! Bake your teacher cookies or something! Every single year there are people who come onto CC and freak out because their admission was rescinded and they had to go to community college for the semester. Seriously, the rule is in place for a reason and UCSD follows it pretty strictly.

a C is fine right? is it bad when they see a C ?

^ C is passing so it’s fine. Just need to maintain a 3.0 GPA

hi can you answer sweetdreamzzz question, i wanna know too:
i have a question about the competitiveness at UCSD… since math/science classes are graded on a curve, do people not collaborate as much when studying because they want to do better than their classmates? or do classmates study together without worrying about the curve?

^Strange, I overlooked that question before or I would have answered it. Students are very open to collaborating in classes in my opinion.

Yeah, I agree with $KingsElite$. People in my math/science classes like to collaborate. For example, they form study groups so that they can help each other out for homework or tests/quizzes.
