Any questions for a current ERC student?

I'll take some time to answer any questions you guys might have about ERC or UCSD in general.

THANK YOU, thank you thank you!
I have so many questions I don't even know where to start...

Are you happy at ERC? Do you wish you had gone someplace else?

How is the workload with the GE's? Manageable, or so bad that you have no time for clubs/other activities etc.

Is it easy to make friends? are people in general social and outgoing. (Sorry I know, dumb question)

I read in some other thread that ERC has a lot of parties and is one of the more social colleges. Yes/No?

I know ERC is fairly far from the center of campus.. but is it really THAT bad? I don't mind walking, especially in san diego weather!

EDIT: already thought of another one.
6. How hard is it to register for classes... since there are so many students, do the most popular classes get filled up really quickly etc.

Out of curiosity, what is your major?

Sorry these questions are kind of lame but I'm sure I'll have a lot more as I am like 80% going to UCSD! thank you again :)

Yes, I'm very happy at ERC. The only other place I would want to live is Muir, because they have bigger rooms and are close to the middle of campus. But I'm excited for next year because everyone in ERC gets a single in the apartments, which no other college has. Either way, I think ERC and Muir are equal.

The workload is awful compared to most of the other colleges. But I'm not saying you'll be super busy. Don't believe that stuff they tell you about how for each hour in class you're suppose to spend two hours studying/doing homework outside of class; it's more like 3-5 hours per class per week. MMW can either require little work or tons of work, depending which professor you get.

Don't worry, it's college, most people that go to college don't know anyone there and are very willing to befriend anyone to come by.

Yes there's plenty of parties. Coming from ERC it's hard to say how we compare socially to the other colleges since I mostly party in ERC, but from what I usually hear people do say ERC parties a lot.

It's about a 10 minute walk to the center of campus, it's not bad but I get tired of it sometimes.

Depends how many units you have from AP classes, registration times are assigned based on how many units you have. If you took at least 6 you shouldn't have much trouble. But if not it's still not that bad, you might get some worse professors or time slots at worst.

I'm in structural engineering.

thank you so much for this thread!
okkk so is
1. ERC really the more unpopular college? because seems like not a lot of people talks about it
2. Is our GE the hardest to fulfill? is MMW worth learning and is it like a history class??
3. Is freshman dorm mostly triple, is there a high possibility to get a single room?
4. I heard that international students are all housed in ERC, do you guys hang out alot w/ international students? do we live in the same resident hall w/ international students? i would love to meet ppl from diffefrent countries~
5. I heard that our counselor is not really helpful.. is that true?

and lastly.........just a personal question.. i am a Econ major but i am still deciding between UCI and UCSD... what would be your personal suggestion?

Thank you so much ! i appreciate!!!

No

ERC and Revelle are roughly equally difficult. MMW is basically a history class; I don't like it, but whatever, you gotta deal with GEs.

There's very few singles in ERC, I believe it's 1/15 students in the suites gets a single, and not all of them are freshmen. Apply for a single and state you have some medical reason for wanting it. Like you're an extremely light sleeper and can't sleep with someone else in the room.

Yes, international students live in I-House, which is located in ERC, I don't really socialize with them much, nor do I notice many other freshmen doing so, but you can apply to live in I-House as a sophomore/junior.

They're not bad, but you could get the same amount of information as you would from them by spending a few minutes on your department's website.

UCSD >>>> UCI... but I'm biased

would you recommend bringing a car freshman year? where do you park it?

What is the ERC dorm situation like? Are a lot of people in ERC in triples?

I know some questions are very typical. Sorry!

I heard ERC has a lot of females compared to males. Is the ratio evident and does it influence the social scene much?

I'm hearing mixed things about the dorm food at ERC. How is it in your opinion?

I'm majoring in International Studies- Poli Sci and I've heard that UCSD has a very good Poli Sci department. A lot of people I've met that are at UCSD are will be going there are going for the biology/science programs and have majors in those fields. Is there a big population of students in the Social Sciences field?

How's the traveling if you don't have a car?

Can you elaborate more about MMW's? I understand that you are not a fan, but do a lot of students pull off A's in the course? Do most of the professors teach MMW 1-6 well? Is it mostly essays?

Is it beneficial if we are majoring in a social science?

I highly recommend bringing a car, you almost need one to be able to have fun here.

Most people are in triples. Most suites consist of 2 doubles, 3 triples, 1-2 singles.

vickkyx
1. There are a lot more girls than guys but it seems that there is a better ratio of people who are actually involved in the social scene.
2. It's pretty decent but you'll get sick of it halfway through the year. We also have OVT very close by so late night food is easy.
3. Yes, but most just in ERC.
4. Bad. Getting to ralphs takes about 30-40 minutes both ways on the bus, everywhere else is further.

rjinp
Grades people pull off are completely determined on how hard the professor's tests are, and his grading policy, and how easy your TA grades. About half the professors are ok, a few are good, and a few are horribly boring.

I can't see it hurting your general knowledge of your field but it won't help you get a job

Hey thanks so much for this post! I've just got some random questions

If I wanted to play some racquetball at RIMAC, could I basically just go in and play?

Okay, I guess I come from a pretty boisterous on-the-beach surfer high school in southern California with good looking people. People are pushing me to go to UCSB because they think I won't be able to have my fun at UCSD (socially dead yadda yadda I don't believe it). How are the people at UCSD, particularly ERC? On this post this guy said that we've got the hottest people, is that true (not that it matters, I'm just curious)? This is a lame, possibly condescending question (sorry), but people tell me over and over how ucsd people aren't very attractive...and I want to prove them wrong

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-california-san-diego/474807-eleanor-roosevelt.html?highlight=ERC

My friend's going to be in Revelle, and you said that you usually hang out with people in ERC, does that mean I probably won't see her often?

thanks so much!

^^ good question.. as shallow as it sounds, I hope there are some hot guys... hahaha.. what about in the frats?

yes

Its hard to say which college has the hottest people... it seems to be different for each class. It's not like everyone at UCSD is ugly obviously, but most look fairly unattractive.

Most high school friendships don't really last in college to be honest

I'm interested in the international house at ERC...I'm going to be a freshman but I would like to house there as a sophmore later on. what is the best way to go about it? Also, how are the people in the I-House?

lako19,

"Most high school friendships don't really last in college to be honest"

aww man, really? is it really hard to keep in contact with your best friends? are you still talking to any of your highschool ones?

Is there a P/NP option if I don't think I can get an A in a class?

Is campus housing guaranteed for freshmen?

Is there a computer cluster (with printers) at the dorms?

Is there an escort service at night?

How open/secluded is the walk from main campus?

How far is the classroom from the dorms, I am majoring in social science?
Thanks

hey, i'm a second year and wanted to help you out by answering your questions...

there is a P/NP option for classes but your major/GE may require that you take the class for a grade (such as MMW, for example)

Campus housing is guaranteed for freshman (though you should sign up for housing now because it doesn't cost anything extra...you don't even need to do your Statement of Intent to Register to sign up...it takes about 5 minutes and you are more likely to get a spot in Eleanor Roosevelt College instead of over at Revelle), and you can take advantage of the two year housing guarantee that UCSD offers if you would like

everybody has their own desk, and the printers can go on the floor under the desk if it takes up too much room on your desk...

there is an escort service at night, you just call 858 534-WALK and someone will meet you and walk you...

um...by main campus I'm assuming you mean Price Center area (by the library)...like mentioned earlier, the walk takes about 10 minutes and there are various ways you can walk back, the most popular method is through the "forest" which is basically a group of trees that has a worn path through it and that cuts the walking time...it always has a lot of people walking through it during the day...though it's a bit scary walking home at night through the trees...the longer route via the main walk area is just a couple of minutes longer and is pretty well lit at night...remember you can always call the escort service, free of extra charges!

You'll find that the closest classroom is right across the street (MMW discussion) but that the other buildings are generally only about a 7-10 minute walk (ie Peterson Hall, Solis) from Eleanor Roosevelt College...however, if you need to take science classes the walk is generally 10-15 minutes because you need to get to buildings like York Hall and Warren Lecture Hall

Hope that helps :)

So after briefly looking over the GEs, I notice that there are a couple subjects that require only two courses, Quantative/Formal Skills, Natural Sciences, and Fine Arts. My question is:

How long do each of the courses in each of the fields last? 1 quarter?

Yeah, it's only 1 quarter per course.

I was told that the dinner hall charge by the item. Is that right?
My friend at UCLA has all the food he can eat. How do they bill me for the meal plan then? Is there a meal plan?
