Does Vassar have any cross-registration opportunities at other colleges?

You can do your study abroad junior year at another college (there’s several choices). There is also a 3-2 Engineering program with Dartmouth.

Given Vassar’s somewhat infamous Gender balance, how’s the dating/social scene at vassar? Also How close-knit is the community?

How is the environmental program at Vassar? Also do they offer a BA or a BS in it?

Are there any traditions? What are they?

Collegecollege2 asked what is the best thing about Vassar (last month).
My opinion as a parent…
We attended the orchestra concert last night and almost every seat in the concert hall was filled with friends and supporters of the musicians. This was just a regular concert (not guest artists or student soloists). Vassar’s students support and respect each other. It was great to see a concert hall filled with positive energy encouraging the musicians and just enjoying the music. And the concert was excellent also.

Social/Dating scene: I haven’t found it to be a problem. I’ve started dating someone within a month of being here, plenty of people have found random hookups (though that’s not really my thing) and I know quite a few other people who have coupled up as well. You don’t really “feel” the gender imbalance, even with the slightly higher than average gay to straight male ratio.

Enviro: Vassar has a multidisciplinary Environmental Studies program (and only offers BA’s, so…) but that’s all I know about it.

Traditions: Oh boy, there’s quite a few. Serenading, where seniors douse freshman in water (in the past it was condiments and food) and freshman sing to them as houses. Convocation and girls carrying the “daisy chain”, Primal Scream (everyone screams on the quad midnight before finals start) and others I can’t remember.

do allot of students play musical instruments, and are there allots of student bands ? also, is there any soundproofed place for rehearsal at Vassar?

S1 says that a lot of people play musical instruments and and there tons of student bands. He is in one of them and they play on campus often. There are not too many places set up for rehearsal though - it helps if someone in the band has connections in the music department. He had 80-100 people attend their last show (small venue) - it was filled and they had to turn people away.

thanks allot

Can you tell me about the creative writing programs? We heard that they had been cut back of late…

Do you know any transfer students? If so, did they apply for financial aid and what kind of stats did they have? I became interested in Vassar sort of retroactively and am now kicking myself for not applying as a senior…

My essay is almost 1000 characters and I uploaded the file. Is it ok or do I need to cut it to 500?

I’m a transfer! message me if you want to talk

About transfers: I know a transfer student, and from what I hear, many students transfer because Vassar is much more affordable and offers better financial aid than their original school. But, the numbers aren’t really in the favor of transfer students; they accept very few transfers every year.

Essay length: CUT IT DOWN! My first essay was almost 1,200 words long, and my mother basically yelled at me until I cut it down and I thank her for it now. Admissions at any college does not want to read through heinously long essays and that could definitely work against you. Brevity is wit. Once you get here, the English professors will beat you over the head with that idea; keep it short, and cut down on any and all fluff. Take out all the unnecessary “thats” or fluffy adverbs. And “very.” If your essay is long because of fluff, this will help. If it’s long because of content, that will be harder, and it may just be best to write a new one.

I have tons of questions!
Can I have your e-mail or skype or facebook? :D

It’s just 1000 characters. not a 1000 words. I can’t write everything in 500 characters.

Couple of questions:
Do you know anything about the visual arts program in particular?
Is the drug scene at Vassar really prominent? Is it something that is happening all the time?
How easy is it to access NYC?
How is the financial aid?

The Studio Art program is very strong, as well as the Art History department. I have friends who are majors an they love the programs, and I’ve seen their work, which is some pretty fantastic stuff.

The drug scene is about as prominent as you want it to be. If you hang out with people who are into that, you’ll find plenty of it, if you find others who prefer other ways to have fun then it definitely won’t affect you. We have a great alternative entertainment space that is usually packed, as well as wellness floors where there are no substances allowed at all.

NYC is easy to get to, it’s the last stop both ways so you can sleep both ways. Its a little pricey to go very often, but the hour and a half train ride isn’t bad at all.

Financial aid tends to be very generous. I have friends who chose to come here because Vassar offered them the most aid. Plenty of people barely pay anything because they can’t afford it.

Do most people go to NYC at least once in the year?
