I read on duke website with 5 on chem u go into 23L.

I haven't taken any chem, being an econ/chinese major, but I have a ton of friends who have. For those who were in 23, I heard that it was alot of work and pretty hard, but the tradeoff is you don't have to take 21 AND 22 over two semesters. 21 is good if you just need one chem class and is almost completely freshmen. From what I hear, its not terrible, but by no means easy. Take that wishy-washy statement for what it's worth I suppose.

I believe that if you have a 5 on the AP chem test, you have the choice of taking 22, 23, or 151.

I've told a couple of people this, but if I had thought of it before first semester last year, I would have read an AP chem book over the summer and taken a placement test (or however they determine if you can do chem 23 w/o AP credit) to get into chem 23... chem 21 and 22 were just too drawn out for me. I mean, I was learning stuff near the end that I'm pretty sure I hadn't done in high school chem, but I had already stopped going to lecture. I know that for some people this extra time is good... I just feel I could have taken on chem 23.

D,

There is an all-freshman section in 151, meaning that it's possible for freshmen to qualify into 151. When I was taking 23, I can assure you that we were urged to take 151 if we'd scored a 5 on the AP.

I took Organic Chem as a freshman with Widenhoefer, who's teaching the sophomore section this year. Be wary of the freshman section- people in there are VERY smart, extremely prepared, and fairly competitive (by Duke's standards). One nice thing about taking Chem 151 is that you can easily drop down to Chem 23 if you don't do well on your first exam- don't feel like you're stuck in the class.

Also don't forget that the kids are smarter, but the curve is often more generous.

Interesting. Thanks guy. I guess I'll wait for AP results b4 deciding.

how does one go about setting up a time to take the chem placement test to get into 23L?

Does anyone know anything about the professor (Jiyong Hong) who is teaching the freshman section of orgo this year? I can't find any reviews. Thanks,

So I enrolled in Math 41, but now have credit for Math 31L (which means I could take 32L). If I take 41 and pass, can I move on to 103 in the spring semester?

Completing either 32 or 41 will let you take 103.
