Any questions for a current student?

^I live in Haggett currently. there are usually people in the lounge area pretty much all the time but you can’t hear them from your room unless the door to the hallways is open. There’s really no problem with noise at all unless someone is talking right outside your door or something. But I sleep early compared to most people and study in my room a lot and it’s never a problem. And there’s still ample opportunity to meet lots of people if you want.

I’d imagine McCarty is similar, and McMahon to a slightly lesser extent. I would definitely stay away from Terry and Lander though.

UW is on the quarter system, correct? How do you like that? How many classes do most people take per quarter?

Mcmahon is on the hub system ie the floors contain a number of self contained 8 room plus sitting room units or pods. Those pods also have their own showers and bathrooms. This system means that you do not get the hanging out in the floors kind of socail atmosphere because everyone is centred on their own pod.

For some the pod system is not popular because you don’t get the chance to meet everyone on your floor and if you dont like the other 7 in your hub you are kind of screwed. But I have a room that overlooks the stadium and lake and it’s a great view :)

Yes it is. I personally really like it (maybe because i had sort of a quarter system in h.s.). Most classes are 5 credits and you need 180 to graduate so that puts you on track to take an average of 15 credits per quarter, 3 quarters per year for 4 years (assuming you don’t come in with any credits, although many do). So it’s common to take 3 5-credit classes per quarter.

thanks you all for the info!
i’m not accepted to uw yet, but if i get the chance i probably will look around the dorms to get a better idea. if any of you live in other dorms, please leave some info, that would be great! :)

Hi, I have been accepted as a freshmen for falll 2010 and will be in the college of arts and sciences. I understand that the majors in this college require a foreign language requirement. I took Spanish I in ninth grade, Spanish II freshmen yr., Spanish III sophmore yr. Did I take enough foreign language to satisfy the requirment? If not, can I just take Spanish I my freshman yr at UDUB to satisfy this requirment? I hope I don’t have to take refresher classes in order to pass Spanish IV.
Thanks for helping out.

^ As I understand it as of this year, 3 years of high school foreign language satisfies the requirement. But if you’re looking to continue on in Spanish you’ll have to take a placement test to determine which level you have to start in.

^^ thank you. I love this forum. It has helped me so much. My worry about the foreign language requirement is that Spanish I was taken in junior high, Spanish II & III in high school., so… two years of high school foreign language? I sooooo don’t want to take Spanish again. Thanks you so much. Also, I’m so happy to be accepted into UDUB, but before I make a final decision about accepting, I want to be sure I know what to expect.
I also was accepted into Western Washington, Bellingham into the Honors Program.
Any info will be appreciated. Thanks again.

i have a question related with foreign language.
aren’t we supposed to get the credit through IB or AP exams?
are you sure the foreign language requirement will be fulfilled just by taking 3 or more years of foreign language during high school?

The UW is really the best resource for your foreign language questions. It appears that something more than HS classes is now required. Start here:

[UW Advising - Foreign Language](http://www.washington.edu/uaa/gateway/advising/degreeplanning/gebsrforlan.php)

^ i don’t know how it appears that way since it explicitly says:

“complete the third year high school level of a foreign language”

as a requirement.

yeah i know…i’m confused about that too.
i’m on my forth year of spanish, so does that mean i don’t have to take a foreign language class in UW? i don’t think i’ll get the credit, but would it at least fulfill the grad requirement?

^ you know, I’m not really sure about that. It says 3rd year level but does that mean all 3 levels have to be taken in high school? I’m not sure, you may need to ask someone else about that.

But I do know for sure, if you have taken at least 3 years of language in h.s. you have fulfilled the requirement.

Yes, you will have completed the requirements…I am in the exact same situation, having taken Spanish I in eighth grade and then Spanish II and III in high school…and on the UW website there is a place you can click to see how you are progressing with your degree (DARS) and my foreign language requirement is shown as completed.

Yes, I would say that McMahon, Haggett, and McCarty all fall into the category of quiet but not completely dead. I really like living in McMahon but some report that it’s hard to meet people outside of your cluster, so perhaps Haggett and McCarty would be the way to go for you?

I actually really like it. The standard load would be 15 credits (three 5 credit classes), but I generally end up taking four classes per quarter, or 18 credits (three 5 credit classes and one 3 credit class). The tuition is the same for 12 through 18 credits, so I have a hard time passing up a “free” class.

^^^Thank you for you knowledge and time, it is very appreciated. Although I am very excited about going to UDUB, I’m nervous too. It’s just that I’ll be paying OOS, and now that I’ve been reviewing the biology requirement, it seems that I’ll be having to spend time taking pre-prerequiste classes. Not taking another year of foreign language helps me save time/$ a bit but…

Am I ready for the weed out classes for biology? This is my background:
Math pre-calc B,C
Chem A,A (not AP)
Bio A,A
AP Bio A,A
AP Bio 5
SAT Math: 670
What chem series and what math placement will I be ready for? I am thinking about taking pre-calc this summer at a CC and possibly Chem for refresher.
I want to be prepared, and do well. I also want to have a balanced life.
Thanks again… I have so many questions…

You only take a placement test for Chem if you want to do the honors series. Otherwise everyone takes 142 (unless you have AP credits).

If you did take precalc at a community college you would need to send UW your grades, and then at UW you would take the next math in the sequence (no placement test necessary)

[UW Advising - Placement Tests](http://www.washington.edu/uaa/gateway/advising/registration/placementtests.php)

^^^Wow! you’re great, thanks for getting back and thank you for the link!! This is the info. I need.
Are you happy with the classes and instructors, are they challenging but well taught, or challenging and confusing? Do you find that there is support if you need extra help, etc… Can I ask, how are you doing in your classes? Thanks again.

Hi. Do you know people that transferred from community colleges like BCC (or…I guess it’s BC now)? If so, is it harder to get in that way? I moved out of WA last year and I attended Newport (really competitive school in Bellevue), but I’m afraid I have a small chance of getting into UW right away as I’m OOS.

Hi everyone!

I’m going to be a visiting student in the spring quarter and I was wondering:

1)Foreign students. Do you think that it’s easy for foreigners to relate with American students? Do they usually hang out by theirselves or get along with people outside their national group? Are you guys open to meet people from abroad?

2) Living Off campus. It’s possible to rent a room but having a meal plan?

That’s all for now… but I think I will come up soon with other questions!

Ciao e grazie!! =)
