Any of yall have any questions for a first year? Anything's game: Academics (classes, professors, TA's, majors, etc), Admissions (stats, applications, essays, SAT/ACT, etc.), Living on Grounds/Charlottesville, Athletics, Social Life (frats/sororities, drinking/drugs, clubs, service, etc), or anything else you want to ask a wahoo

What’s the social life like at UVA? Like, if I were to go out on a Saturday night, what would be available for me to do? Do most people go out, or are most kids more academically oriented? How important are frats and sororities to social life? And for the times when I don’t feel like partying, is there anything else to do?

Haha, sorry for all the questions about social life, I promise I’m not just in it for the parties, but those type of things are harder to learn from websites.

Also, what are the dorms like? And how long are students required to live on campus?

Thanks for your help :)

^It is possible to be academic, intelligent, and still have an exciting social life.

I am hoping to go to UofVA as well and I’m not a big partier, but I’ve got an open mind about it.

How about this: if we both get in, we could be the designated drivers and drive all the fine women home after parties…sound like a plan? haha

Sorry to spoil, or at least postpone, your brilliant plan…first-years aren’t allowed to have cars.

They’re transfers. Or, at least Livingston.

How is the poker scene at UVA. I’m not really into gambling but I like occasionally playing texas hold’em. Also, have you seen any people who play online poker on the campus?

^ Are you serious?

You’re not into gambling yet you are curious about the Texas Hold’em scene on campus?

lol…you have too much time on your hands.

Lol, Livingston, one hobby of my friends and I is to just get together on a friday night, order some Chinese food, and play 5$ buy in poker. I’ve become a lot closer with my friends through this because I go to a private school and only really see them when we either play poker or just hang out. It is a fun thing to do once in a while, but no way will I ever do a buy in worth more than 10-20 and I do not plan on playing more than once a month max.

I’m just messin’ with you man. Nothing wrong with some good food, friends, and poker! ;)

I know :). I love it though. I lose every game but it is such a good time. Playing poker, watching old classic Disney movies and playing basketball would be my dream. I basically played poker 1 day a week with friends, basketball 3 days a week, and watched over 50 movies this summer with my friends. I hope in college, I get a room-mate who loves watching movies over excessive partying. I also hope my room-mate is a nerd but will still play basketball. Kind of a weird type of person, but hey that is what I am lol. Also livingston listen to this song, I just found it and it’s pretty good.

I would say most people are both academics and partiers. A typical Saturday for first years involves wandering around Rugby Rd. trying to get into frats. If you don’t know people, it can be a real pain to get in, so make sure to meet a bunch of people because once you do, it’s pretty much a given that someone will know a brother somewhere. The social life definitely revolves around greek life, but I actually know some people who go to parties and don’t drink. Even if you don’t plan on drinking, Rugby Rd is a must. Great place to meet people.

Dorms are okay. Only first years live on grounds. I think about 50% move off grounds for second year and by fourth year most people live off grounds. The typical plan is dorm-apartment-frat/sorority-house.

Hey!
Thanks for posting this thread!! It is the perfect place for my questions (at least I think so…) I have some questions about the admissions process. If you feel comfortable, would you mind sharing your stats and test scores that you had when you applied to UVA? Also, I have heard SO MANY different stories about what UVA values the most in their applicants (what I’ve heard the most has been GPA and essays), and I was wondering if your application process gave you any insight into that. I know that there isn’t one strict formula that the admissions office follows, and that it is probably more of a case by case basis but I just think that any information I can get at this point would be really helpful. Thank you so much and let me know if I need to clarify anything! :)

Social life doesn’t really revolve around frats THAT much. I’d say about 50% of your typical first years have a heavily party-frat oriented time, and the other half are doing other things with their friends. It’s a big school, and it definitely varies by person. Rugby Rd is definitely a fun place to go occasionally, but there are definitely a lot of other things.
