Any questions for an incoming transfer?

At the admitted transfers advising session I was at a month or two back, I think there were a good mix of starting colleges.

As far as I’m aware, I’m getting credits for all the classes I took except Intro Law (as a legal studies minor and the corresponding classes are unique to Brandeis); as I wasn’t sure I would be getting into or attending Columbia, I didn’t pick my classes specifically to match those there.

You do stil need a letter of rec from a counselor and 2 from professors, yes.

I’m not sure about how that would work out - I think there’s a certain number of credits that constitutes a “semester,” but you’d have to check with Columbia.

I didn’t have any legacy to any Ivies, and I’m not sure exactly how it’s weighed for transfer.

@cordova I’m not sure that you’re really supposed to be making multiple commonapp accounts…but i could be wrong

Hello, I am currently a sophomore student at Seton Hall University, a small Catholic school in Northern New Jersey. Recently, I have re-evaluated my situation at Seton Hall and feel I could thrive at a more competitive school. After completing research and reviewing my grades/test scores/extra curricular activities(listed below), I have decided to apply to the University of Virginia and the University of North Carolina. I am asking anyone who has any knowledge about these schools at whether or not you think I would be able to be admitted to these schools. Also, does anyone have any recommendations to schools I should apply to(preferably down south)? Size does not matter to me! Thanks to anyone who can help!

Ending High School GPA: 3.1 our of 4.0
SAT score: 1850
Seton Hall University GPA: 3.498 out of 4.0 (planning on getting a 3.7 this year)

Extra Curricular activities:
-Started a Club Lacrosse team at my current school.
-Write for the school news paper.
-Part of the Italian Student Union.
-Leadership program(Business honors program).
-F.O.C.U.S.- Catholic Charity Program.

I’ll leave that question to others, since I’m not particularly familiar with those schools. Enjoy the bump (and good luck)!

What are my chances of getting into a great liberal arts college, like vassar, when I ended high school with a 2. Something, and am currently maintaining a 3.7 in cc? I’m also about to take the SATs, since did not do so in high school.

I’m starting this back up again…

Last year I went through the process of transfer applications, and successfully entered Columbia University as a sophomore transfer this year.

And so, ask away.

I’m applying to a similarly great university in NY. While I understand cases vary, I still wonder what parts of your application you think boost your chances the most.

How did the courses you took freshman year match up with their core?

Stats? Lol might as well be the one to ask. Also how much of a role do you think your essays played in your acceptance?

I’m interested in knowing what university you came from, you don’t have to disclose the name if you want to just give me a blanket statement.

what major did you transfer into?

What was your high school record like, and why Columbia?

No offense guys but a quick search on her previous threads would yield the answers to your questions.

Question 1:

Question 2:

Answer 2:

You can also find other answers to the major and Why Columbia questions. It’s more efficient to see if your question has been asked and answered already.

I concur lol I searched through his posts instead of asking anymore questions lol

Thanks, Mitch.

To answer the additional questions, I think my last supplementary essay is what did it for me. Suffice to say, it was done in a slightly unconventional way that I think helped set me apart. I think I also had some pretty good letters of recommendation, and of course, a good GPA never hurts.

The courses I took freshman year all transferred credit-wise, aside from my Intro to Law, which is a Legal Studies course Brandeis offers that really doesn’t have an equivelant at many schools. I was able to get out of University Writing with my UWS (University Writing Seminar) from Brandeis, and I’m waiting to see if one of my CompSci courses will be considered for a Science credit, but a lot of the X-Hum courses (LitHum, MusicHum, ArtHum) and CC aren’t easy to place out of (and are great classes anyway, so I wouldn’t want to have placed out).

I was going to pursue an English/ Psych double major with a minor in CompSci at Brandeis. I’m currently pursuing a major in English with a minor in Psych (and am taking a few CompSci courses on the side).

Does anyone where to get the fee waiver form for the common app transfer application? I checked with my school’s financial aid, advisory, and admission office. They had no clue. I emailed the school that I am applying to and they didn’t give me the right response. Any help is appreciated! thanks

Hey, Malapropism! Congratulations on your acceptance to Columbia, and thanks so much for making this VERY helpful thread. While I know that you did not apply for financial aid, I was wondering if you know any other transfer students who did and whether their full need was met? I’m considering applying to Columbia as a transfer student this year, but I would be unable to attend without significant aid, so I just wanted to know what I’m getting into before I apply. Thanks a lot for all your help, and again, congrats!

I’m not sure where the fee waiver form is. I’m sorry.

Thanks Hopes! I’m pretty sure that Columbia is need-blind to students who are not international, so if you’re a US citizen, it shouldn’t be an issue. I have a few international friends, and to be perfectly honest, we haven’t really discussed finances, but if it might applicable to your case to know their situations, let me know, and I’ll see if I can find out.

did you get my essays? lol

Congratulations, Malapropism, and thank you - it’s really nice of you to do this. I’m going to say upfront that my math score is 580 (insert horrified gasp!). That being said, my superscore was 2160, and I graduated in the the top 6% of my high school class, so I’m clearly not a drooling moron. I was rejected in the ED round last year and am at NYU now. Realistically I think I will be able to achieve 3 A’s and one B (I would love to say B+ or A- but I just don’t see it happening, my Spanish class is really kicking my ass) for this semester, giving me a GPA of about 3.75 for my first semester of college. Given the high note on which I ended high school and the fact that I have very compelling reasons for wanting to transfer and would pretty much throw myself in front of a bus for Columbia, combined with a decent if not superb college GPA, do you think I have a realistic change of admission? Or is the math score simply too much of a handicap? I wrote my Harvard essay last year essentially on why they shouldn’t reject me based on stats alone, and it got me waitlisted. Do you think a similar approach would be worth trying here, or is it too much of a gamble?

Thanks for any advice you can give. This process is so weird, and it’s made doubly awkward by the fact that both my dean and at least one of my professors are affiliated with Columbia…
